Former Commissioner Lonnie Waters Dies

Former Jeff Davis County Commissioner Lonnie Waters died Oct. 6 at the age of 86.
Waters served 16 years on the Jeff Davis County Board of Commissioners, making him one of the longest serving commissioners in the county’s history.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, had a farming operation in the Altamaha District of the county, and along with his wife of 63 years, JoAnn Miles Waters, he started and owned Waters Electric, Inc., which performed electrical contracting over a tri-state area.
Mr. Waters was the son of the late Will Waters and Mollie Rowell Waters and was born and raised in Jeff Davis County. He was a devoted member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
For years, Mr. Waters and his family hosted a barbecue and fireworks show to share his love of country with the entire community.
Survivors include wife, JoAnn; daughter Cindy Woodcock; sons Kevin (Priscilla) Waters, and Keith “Peanut” (Sara) Waters all of Hazlehurst; sister Sue Williams of Macon; grandchildren Trent Woodcock, Travis Woodcock, Ansley Hall, Julie Simmons, Christopher Powell, Kenlie Sharpe, Treyton Waters, and Will Waters; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
