Former Commission Chair Dies

Ray Harold Wooten, former member and chairman of the Jeff Davis County Board of Commissioners, died Sept. 19 at his home at the age of 77.
Ray was a hard-working, successful business owner, an avid golfer and enjoyed watching golf and football on TV. He brought many positive and progressive changes to the County Commissioner during his years of service.
Ray is survived by his wife Patricia Conner Wooten; step-daughters Angie Fussell Varnadoe and Kathy Fussell Brinkely; grandchildren Zac Newham, Blakelee (Grant) Merritt, Courtney Knowles (Clayton), Grant Brinkley and Layla Brinkley; nine great-grandchildren; brothers Thomas (Dorothy) Wooten and Olin (Miriam) Wooten; sister Winona Hartung; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Sept. 23 at 11 a.m. in Wainright Parlor Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Palms Memorial Garden.
The family will gather at 71 First Road, Hazlehurst.
