Board Meeting Is A Short One

Not that Monday’s National Championship football game had anything to do with it, but the Board of Education went through their Monday agenda quickly and the meeting was ended in plenty of time for everyone to get home and watch Georgia win the National Championship.
Jeff Davis Middle School Principal Dr. Brent Coleman recognized several of his school’s students for their perfect scores on one or all of their Multi Grade Diagnostic (MGD) Assessments.
Seventh grader Shunia Kirby had 100 on the 4th MGD, 8th grader Vincent Ly had 100 on the 4th MGD, sixth grader Kolby Jarrell had 100s on the 3rd and 4th MGDs so far this year, and sixth grade Jeremiah Davis had 100s on all four MGDs so far this year.
Transportation Director Alvin Merritt gave transportation updates saying fuel prices will be bid out each time fuel is needed, approximately every 6-8 weeks, installation of air conditioning in the shop should start in February, and installation of new equipment at the fueling station will be in mid-February.
The board approved an updated policy on employee leaves and absences, focusing on long term leave.
The board briefly discussed the new election district lines approved by the County Commission.
The group gave approval for middle school honor band students to go on an out-of-state trip to Troy, Ala.
The board approved internal control procedures that were to be submitted to the state.
Finance Director Betty Corbitt gave her monthly financial update, including pointing out that the average Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax receipts over the last four months was over $195,000, far more than the previous year’s average monthly receipts.
The board accepted the resignations/terminations of custodian Marilyn Hernandez, JDMS math teacher Omar Franco, JDES music teacher Kelly Efstathiou and JDPS paraprofessional Cassandra Dukes.
The board hired Adam Kirby as Director of Facilities and Operations, Tyler Stevenson – general maintenance, paraprofessionals Jenna Brewer and Candice Giddens, and custodians Portia Capers, Laguna Jordan and Anna Gonzales.
