Pickup-pedestrian accident claims a life
A pickup truck-pedestrian accident last Thursday night resulted in the death of 67-year-old Ricky Ottis Spell of Hazlehurst.
According to a report filed by the Georgia State Patrol, the accident occurred on July 8 at 10:17 p.m. on Jarman Street near its intersection with Larry Contos Boulevard. Mr. Spell was walking west in the eastbound lane of traffic when an eastbound 2001 Toyota Tacoma driven by Cashus Jordan Crosby, 28, of Hazlehurst struck him.
According to the report, Mr. Crosby said he had stopped at the red light at the intersection of Jarman Street and Larry Contos Boulevard and when the light turned green, he began traveling east. The collision occurred 200 feet past the intersection and Mr. Crosby said he did not see the pedestrian before the impact. After the collision, the truck skidded into the turn lane, Mr. Crosby ran back along the shoulder of the road to see what he had hit, saw Mr. Spell lying on the shoulder of the road and ran to the nearby convenience store to have someone call 911.
The report noted that Mr. Spell was at fault in the accident and no charges were filed.
