Fitzgerald High’s baseball team came into last week’s 3-game series with Jeff Davis with a 17-7 record while the Yellow Jackets stood at 9-15.
So the Hurricanes were surprised to find themselves down 0-2 after the first two games of the series, as Jeff Davis won 8-3 in Fitzgerald and 2-0 in Hazlehurst, But Fitzgerald recovered for a 6-1 victory Friday in the final game of the series.
Tuesday’s opener featured the Yellow Jackets’ 10-hit offense led by Jacob Laney with a single, a double and 2 RBI.
Thursday’s 2nd game in Hazlehurst was highlighted by Zack Hulett’s 3-hit shutout.
In Friday’s contest in Fitzgerald, the Jackets couldn’t get their offense untracked as the Canes pulled out the 6-1 win.
In Tuesday’s game, JD pulled away to a 4-0 lead through 4 1/2 innings. When the ‘Canes scored 2 in the bottom of the 5th, JD responded with a 4-run 6th to breeze to the win.
In the top of the 2nd, Laney and Brayden Picanso got back-to-back doubles to post a 1-0 lead. Treyton Webster followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0.
The Jackets loaded the bases with no one out in the third and Andrew Hulett hit a grounder to 3rd and Tye Rea was able to beat the throw home to make it 3-0.
In the 4th, Jeremiah Davis’ run-scoring double upped the score to 4-0.
Webster led off the 6th by reaching on an error. Zack Hulett was hit by a pitch and Rea’s 2-run single made it 6-2. Laney followed later with a 2-run single to make the score 8-2.
Zack Hulett and Josh Worthington backed up Laney’s performance with a pair of singles, Davis and Picanso both had a double and an RBI, Rea had a single and 2 RBI, Webster had a single and an RBI and Andrew Hulett drove in a run.
Peyton Jones picked up the win, He pitched 6 innings, giving up one earned run on 9 hits, a walk and a strikeout. Zack Hulett pitched the final inning, walking one and fanning 3.
Zack Hulett’s complete game, 3-hit shutout highlighted Thursday’s game. He walked two and fanned 9.
Jeff Davis’ runs came in the bottom of the 1st as Webster singled, Zack Hulett was hit by a pitch and Rea walked to load the bases. Davis was hit by a pitch to push Webster across the plate and Laney grounded out to 2nd to drive home pinch runner Braylon Varnadore.
JD got only 3 hits, singles by Webster, Davis and Andrew Hulett. Davis and Laney both had an RBI.
The Jackets’ run in Friday’s finale came in the 1st as Zack Hulett reached on a hit, stole second, went to 3rd on an error and scored on an error as Worthington doubled.
Rea, Laney, Picanso and Karter Galbreath all singled in the game.
Webster took the loss on the mound. He went 4 2/3 innings, giving up 5 earned runs on 6 hits, walking one, hitting one and striking out 4. Seth Saunders pitched 1 1/3 inning in relief, blanking Fitzgerald on one hit, no walks and a strikeout.
