Jackets play non-region foes

Jeff Davis High’s baseball team took time off from region play last week and Coach Paul Glass used the time to give his Yellow Jackets three games against strong opposition.
The Jackets lost a pair of games to 19-5 Class 5A Thomas County Central, falling 9-1 Tuesday in Hazlehurst and 4-3 Friday in Thomasville. Wednesday in Cochran the Jackets topped 20-4 Class A, Div. 1 Bleckley County 6-2.
Glass got two exemplary pitching performances during the week.
Junior Zack Hulett got his second straight strong outing against Bleckley as the Royals managed only 3 hits and 2 unearned runs during Hulett’s 6 innings on the mound. And Treyton Webster closed out the game, retiring all 3 batters he faced in the 7th inning, 2 by strikeout.
Senior left-hander Webster followed up with a sparkling performance on the mound Friday in Thomasville as he had a no-hitter going through 5 innings before giving up 2 hits and a run in the 6th. He left the mound with a 3-1 lead but the TCC Yellow Jackets scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th to eke out a 4-3 win.
Tuesday against TCC, the visitors had few problems as they raced to a 9-1 win over JD.
Jeff Davis got an unearned run in the first inning but, from there, they couldn’t crack TCC’s pitching and defense.
Webster opened the bottom of the 1st by reaching on an error. Hulett sacrificed Webster to 2nd and the senior centerfielder came all the way home on another error.
JD threatened in the 3rd as Webster and Hulett led off the inning with back-to-back singles. But a double play and a strikeout snubbed the threat.
Jeff Davis got 2 on in the 6th with a walk and a Jeremiah Davis double but they couldn’t score. They got 2 more on in the 7th with a Brayden Picanso single and a walk, but again no one crossed the plate.
Davis’ double led the batting and Webster, Hulett, Picanso, Josh Worthington and Andrew Hulett each had singles.
Saunders started on the mound and took the loss. He went 2 innings, giving up 6 runs on 4 hits, 4 walks and 2 strikeouts. Peyton Jones threw 3 shutout innings, giving up 2 hits, walking one and striking out 4. Karter Galbreath gave up 3 runs on 2 hits in one inning pitching. He walked 2 and struck out one. Brady Stevers pitched the 7th, yielding a walk and striking out 2.
In Zack Hulett’s previous start against Bacon County he faced the minimum 21 batters. Against the strong Bleckley County lineup, he faced only 24 batters, giving up a pair of unearned runs on just 3 hits. He walked 2 and fanned 6.
The Jackets’ 6 runs were spread out over 4 straight innings. After the Royals got an unearned run in the bottom of the 1st, JD tied the game in the 3rd on an RBI single by Webster.
In the 4th, Jeff Davis took the lead getting 2 runs without a hit thanks to a pair of fielding errors.
JD upped the lead to 5-1 in the 5th via 3 walks, a hit batter and Andrew Hulett’s RBI single.
The final run came in the 6th when Webster led off with a single, stole second and scored on another Royal fielding error.
The Jackets’ 6 runs came on 5 hits, a trio of singles by Webster and singles by Galbreath and Andrew Hulett. All three had one RBI.
Friday’s loss was a heartbreaker for Webster as the senior kept the TCC Yellow Jackets in check for most of his 6 innings on the mound.
Entering the 6th he had allowed only 4 baserunners on 3 walks and an error. But Thomas County Central got a run in the 6th on a pair of singles and 2 walks to spoil Webster’s no-hit shutout.
In the bottom of the 7th, TCC greeted reliever Seth Saunders with a single and a walk. JD responded with a 5-4-3 double play from Andrew Hulett to Picanso to Tye Rea and they breathed a momentary sigh of relief. But a walk, 2 singles and 2 more walks gave Thomas County the win.
Jacob Laney’s double and a pair of singles by Andrew Hulett led the Jeff Davis hitting. Zack Hulett added a single and Webster drove in a run.
Webster gave up one earned run on 2 hits, 5 walks and 7 strikeouts. Saunders yielded 3 runs on 3 hits and 4 walks.
