Jeff Davis High’s girls dropped a pair of region games last week, losing to Brantley County by an inexplicable score of 81-4 and putting up a much better effort against a strong Thomasville team, falling 63-41. Both games were on the road.
The Lady Jacket team that showed up in Nahunta last Tuesday was barely recognizable as their 4-pt. total for the game must have been an all time low for a Jeff Davis girls basketball team … or boys for that matter.
Lady Jacket senior Bree Coney scored a field goal in the first and second quarters and that was it for the game. The Lady Jackets were slapped with two technical fouls and they did not make a trip to the free throw line all night.
Brantley, meanwhile, seemed unable to miss a shot from the field as they scored 30 points in the 1st quarter alone and tallied 35 in the second half with a running clock. The Lady Herons shot 22 free throws to Jeff Davis’ none, hitting 15. Tamiyah Coley scored 23 points in three quarters to lead the Lady Herons and Abbie Lee pitched in 19. They both scored 11 points in the opening quarter.
The Lady Jackets played better Friday night in Thomasville without the services of the only seniors on the team, both starters — Markyla Durden and 4-year starter Latrice Shivers, the latter of whom is out for the rest of the year with a knee injury.
Thomasville, 16-3, had split games with Brantley — a 58-54 overtime loss in Nahunta and an easy, 58-42 win over the Lady Herons only a week before last Friday’s game with Jeff Davis.
Despite missing their two senior starters, the Lady Jackets battled Thomasville doggedly until the end.
But the Lady Bulldogs had too much talent and depth as they built a 34-13 halftime lead. JD fought back valiantly in the 2nd half as Thomasville outscored Jeff Davis by only one point in the 2nd half, 29-28.
Juniors Bree Coney and Brylee Wyatt led the Lady Jacket scoring with 11 points each. Wyatt hit a trio of 3-pt shots and Coney had two from beyond the arc. Freshman Anna Grace Alligood just missed double digits with 9 points, all in the second half and scored 7 of JD’s 13 3rd quarter points.
Sophomore Zijanna Mincey had 7 points and freshman Marlee Burch 3.
The young Lady Bulldogs, who have only one senior on their roster, were led by sophomore Harmony Bryant with 19 points, freshman Justyce Cole with 17 and sophomore Jayla Brooks with 13. Thomasville’s only senior, Kennedy Brooks, contributed only 2 points to the Lady Bulldogs’ offense.
