JD girls win 2 straight

Jeff Davis High’s girls basketball team grabbed the early lead in the Region 1 standings Friday as they took a 49-41 win over Berrien High School in Hazlehurst.
Saturday night, also in Hazlehurst, the Lady Jackets got their second win in a row with a 36-14 shellacking of Toombs County.
Coach KatyBeth Jordan’s charges trailed early in the game against Berrien then eased ahead to take a 24-19 lead at intermission. They led by only two entering the final quarter when, late in the game, Bree Coney dished off assists to Zijanna Mincey and Brylee Wyatt that put JD ahead for good.
Wyatt led three Lady Jackets in double figures with 16, hitting a trio of 3-pt. shots. Mincey had 12, Coney 10, Latrice Shivers 9 and Markyla Durden 2.
Breasia Williams led Berrien with 15 points and Kya Goins had 12.
In November in Lyons, the Lady Jackets lost 54-30 to Toombs County.
But Saturday in Hazlehurst it was a completely different story.
The Lady Jacket defense held the Lady Bulldogs to just 4 first half points, taking a 16-4 lead. While Toombs fought back in the 3rd quarter, Jeff Davis went on a 16-4 run led by Mincey to win going away.
Shivers led the Lady Jacket scoring with 15 points. Wyatt had 8, Mincey 6, Durden 8 and Coney 3.
Only two Lady Bulldogs scored in the game, MaKenna Gardisser had 9 and Ariana Hill 5.
