Girls down Pierce, fall to Telfair & Appling

Jeff Davis High’s girls basketball team won its second game of the season last Tuesday in Blackshear as the Lady Jackets topped Pierce County 42-37. But JD lost its next two games to fall to 2-9 for the season.
Against Pierce, Bree Coney and Brylee Wyatt provided a strong one-two punch with 17 and 15 points respectively. Latrice Shivers had 5, Markyla Durden had 3 and Anna Grace Alligood 2.
Claire Murray topped Pierce with 13 and Mattie McGatha added 11.
Playing at home against Telfair County, Jeff Davis’ girls found themselves down 45-26 after three quarters then outscored the visitors in the final quarter to make it a point closer.
Coney’s 17 points led the Jeff Davis scoring. Shivers, Durden and Wyatt had 6 each and Alligood and Marlee Burch had 2 each.
Jada Batten and Aamonia Pensley had 12 and 10 for the Lady Trojans.
Saturday in Baxley, the Lady Pirates’ full court press stymied JD as Appling led by as many as 21 points in the first half. But after intermission, the Lady Jackets fought back and got within 8 points in the third quarter and within 6 points later, but they could get no closer and wound up falling by 16, 55-39.
Shivers had a big night for JD, scoring 21 points. Wyatt had 8, Coney 5, Zijanna Mincey 2, and Durden, Burch and Alligood 1 each.
The Jackets return to action after the holidays with their first region contest, hosting Berrien Jan. 2
