Mr. L.A. Hand, 94
Mr. L.A. Hand, 94, of Denton, passed away Oct. 31 at his residence.
Mr. Hand was born Feb. 25, 1924, in Jeff Davis County to the late Luther Anderson Hand Sr. and the late Sadie Marchant Hand.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II, retired farmer and a member and deacon of Denton Baptist Church. He was awarded the first “Young Farmer of the Year” award for Jeff Davis County, Farm Family of the Year, Soil Conservationist of the Year and was a board member of Farm Credit, Farm Bureau, and Gold Kist. He is preceded in death by his great-grandson, Everett Lail, six sisters, and two brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Mrs. Mildred Cothern Hand of Denton; daughters and son-in-law, Arlene and Earl Merritt of McRae and Barbara Luberoff of Lexington. S.C.; grandchildren Andrea Merritt Davidson (Sim) of McRae, Avril Tharp Lail (Davin) of Cayce. S.C. and Zachary Anderson Tharp of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Emily Davidson, Merritt Davidson and Millie Davidson, all of McRae, Liam Lail and Stella Lail of Cayce, S.C.; several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Nov. 3 at Denton Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Lee and the Rev. Ken Hutcheson officiating. Interment followed in Denton Cemetery with full military honors.
Active pallbearers were Ryan McLoon, Thomas Kirkland, Wayne Kirkland, Jesse Brantley, Wayne Davis, Kyle Carver and Earl Carter.
Musical selections were rendered by the congregation and Patricia and Darrell Wright.
Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home was in charge.
