Jeff Davis High’s football team defeated Charlton County 35-26 Friday night in Folkston, bringing the Yellow Jackets’ record to 2-0. Charlton fell to 2-1.
The Yellow Jacket offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage as JD picked up 335 yards on the ground.
The Jackets kicked off to start the game and, on 4th-and-19, Charlton punted with Jaiden King catching the ball on his knees at the Jeff Davis 48.
It took the Jackets 12 plays to cover the 52 yards with the score coming on an 11-yd. pass from Mark Durden to La’Trell Sellers.
Both teams showed early game jitters on the drive as both were penalized twice for early starts. There were 3 big plays in the march, the touchdown pass, fullback Kobe Hill broke a couple of tackles and cut outside for a 13-yd. pickup and Durden pitched the ball under pressure to Ian Griffin who got around the right side, made a nifty inside cut to escape a tackle and picked up 13.
Fabian Valdelamar kicked the extra point and the visitors led 7-0.
On Valdelamar’s kickoff, the Indian returner couldn’t get a handle on the awkwardly bouncing pigskin and he fell out of bounds with the ball at the Charlton 6.
Charlton senior fullback Omari Wilson ran 3 times for 15 yards for a 1st down but the Indians quickly abandoned the running game and went to the air. On 4th-and-10 they punted the ball away and the Jackets had the ball at the Indian 43.
Eight plays later the Jackets scored on a 6-yd. run as Griffin covered the distance untouched on the 3rd play of the 2nd quarter. Durden had the big play in the drive when he kept for 14 yards.
Valdelamar booted the P.A.T. to make it 14-0.
On their next possession, the Indians again dropped the running game and went to the air. After 3 plays, including a 7-yd. sack by R.J. Sims, Charlton punted on 4th-and-17.
For the 3rd straight possession the Jackets started with excellent field position, this time at the JD 48. On the 1st play, the Jacket offensive line opened a big hole and Hill darted through, cut to his left and went 38 yards up the middle of the field. After Griffin got 7, Sims bulled his way up the middle for a 3-yd. score. Valdelamar made it 21-0.
After the ensuing kickoff, the Indians went 70 yards in 11 plays to get on the board, scoring on a 28-yd. pass on 3rd-and-15. The P.A.T. kick made it 21-7.
On the 2nd play after the kickoff, Durden kept the ball around his right side, did a spin move to slip by a tackler 2 yards down the field, slipped a tackle off a Sellers block at midfield and raced into the end zone with Sellers running interference. The play covered 68 yards. Valdelamar’s toe made the score 28-7.
On their final possession if the first half, the Indians kept the ball for 9 plays, most of which featured the Charlton quarterback escaping pressure from the relentless JD defensive attack. Freshman Ceith Sellers had a sack, J.J. Benjamin and Jacob Laney broke up passes, and Hill and Sims pressured the quarterback as the 2nd quarter clock wound down.
After scoring on all four of their 1st half possessions, after the 2nd half kickoff the Jackets failed to move the chains on their 1st possession. Valdelamar got off a 48-yd. punt as Charlton started at their own 24.
On the 1st play, Wilson took a direct snap and went up the middle for 34 yards to the Jacket 42. Wilson then got 10 yards to the 32. Despite the success with their ground game, the Indians took to the air again. On 4th-and-10 from the 32, Charlton finally completed a pass in the back corner of the end zone for a score. The P.A.T. kick closed the score to 28-14.
On the 1st play after the kickoff, the Indian defense was fooled by the Jackets’ offensive movement, clearing the way for Hill to dash off the left side for 18 yards. Two plays later, Hill picked up 19 to the Charlton 18. The drive reached the Charlton 16 where, on 3rd-and-8, Durden dropped back to pass, an Indian rusher knocked the ball loose and Charlton recovered at their own 21.
The Indians scored in 10 plays, tallying on the 1st play off the 4th quarter. The extra point kick failed but Charlton had closed to within 28-20 with lots of time remaining in the final quarter.
Charlton tried an onside kick that almost worked, before Ceith Sellers fell on the pigskin at the Jacket 37.
Two plays later, Laney took a pitch from Durden around the left side, shook off a tackler at the line of scrimmage and got outside for 17 yards. Two plays later, Hill slipped through a hole up the middle and raced 50 yards for a TD. Valdelamar kicked the extra point to make it 35-20 with 8:41 left to play.
But the Indians weren’t finished. Valdelamar’s kickoff was returned 55 yards to the Jacket 15.
The Indians ran the ball down to the 8 where, on 3rd-and-3, Jalen Wilson-Gamble broke through the offensive line and, with the help of Sims, brought Wilson down for an 8-yd. loss. Charlton’s 4th down pass fell incomplete as Hill and Kace Galbreath pressured the quarterback. The Jackets took over at the 16 with 6:25 to play.
The Jacket offense couldn’t move the chains and Valdelemar got off a 44-yd. punt to the Charlton 33.
The Indians moved 67 yards in 9 plays and scored with just under 2 minutes to play. The 2-pt. conversion attempt was smothered by Hill and Wilson-Gamble as the score remained 35-26.
After the kickoff, the JD offense got one first down and Durden then knelt on the ball twice to run down the remainder of the clock.
Hill rushed for 225 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries and made five solo tackles.
Durden had 75 yards in 9 carries, Griffin picked up 31 on 4 tries, Laney ran 4 times for 20 yards, Benjamin had 2 carries for 9 yards, and Sims carried once for 3 yards.
