Tennis Has A Busy Week
The Jeff Davis High School Yellow Jackets tennis team turned in a dominant performance during a busy week on the court, sweeping multiple opponents and making a strong early-season statement.
The previous week the teams opened their home schedule with strong performances against Johnson County.
The Yellow Jackets opened region play Feb. 24 with a trip to Berrien High School. Both the varsity boys and girls delivered 5-0 shutouts over the Rebels in their first region competition of the season.
On Wednesday, Jeff Davis traveled to Appling County for matches against Wayne County and Appling. The Yellow Jackets faced Wayne County first and continued their dominant run, with both varsity teams earning another 5-0 sweep.
Jeff Davis then squared off against Appling County. The Lady Pirates are the defending Class 2A state champions, while the Appling boys reached the state quarterfinals last season. Despite the tough competition, both Jeff Davis varsity teams once again secured 5-0 victories.
The Yellow Jackets closed out the week by hosting region rival Brantley County on Feb. 26. Brantley County’s boys and girls teams are the defending state champions from the 2025 season.
“Brantley County has always had a good tennis program, and we knew they were going to throw the best they had at us,” said head coach Mary Katherine Brown.
Several matches were tightly contested, but the Jeff Davis boys fell 1-4 to the Herons. On the girls’ side, however, the Lady Yellow Jackets rose to the occasion.
“The Heron ladies have defeated us in the state championship in both the 2024 and 2025 seasons, so it wasn’t a match that we were taking lightly,” Brown said.
Jeff Davis responded with a commanding 5-0 sweep.
Reflecting on the week, Brown praised her team’s resilience and leadership.
“This week has really shown me exactly what all of these kids are capable of,” she said. “They played a ton of tennis, and they’ve loved the challenge. I’ve watched these seniors specifically play some of their best tennis so far and lead their teams through a pretty grueling and hectic week with a smile on their faces. These are the weeks that you grow — not just as a player, but as a team. I couldn’t ask for any better from them. We’re pretty stoked to really kick off our season like this. The boys went 16-4 as a team this week, only dropping four lines, and the girls went 20-0. I’m pretty proud of them.”
The Yellow Jackets’ junior varsity team traveled to Coffee High Saturday for the JV Jam, but rain forced the cancellation of the tournament.
In the previous week’s play, the Lady Yellow Jackets recorded a 5-0 sweep of the Lady Trojans of Johnson County, winning every singles and doubles match. The boys team faced tougher competition but secured a solid 4-1 victory to complete the sweep of the match.
On Thursday, Jeff Davis hosted the opening round of the Statesboro Slam Tournament, which was relocated due to weather and court conditions. Both the girls and boys teams defeated the Wayne County Yellow Jackets by identical 5-0 scores. The second and third rounds of the tournament were canceled because of inclement weather.
Looking ahead to the week of March 2, Jeff Davis will remain busy. The varsity boys and girls travel to Fitzgerald March 3 at 3 p.m. The Yellow Jackets will host Bacon County March 5 at 4 p.m. To close out the week, Jeff Davis will compete in the Lowndes Tournament in Valdosta at McKey Park on March 6-7, opening play against Coffee County.
