Changes Proposed To Coffee/Jarman Streets

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will begin running a legal advertisement in next week’s edition of the Ledger informing the public of proposed changes to Coffee/Jarman streets along U.S. Hwy. 341.
The project proposes to construct safety improvements, including Reduced Conflict U-Turns (RCUTs), median turns, and pedestrian safety improvements along State Route 19/US Highway 341 from L Street to North Williams Street in the City of Hazlehurst. The project proposes a lane reconfiguration from 2 lanes in each direction to two northbound lanes and one southbound lane with a two-way left turn lane or median in the middle.
Intersection improvements will be installed to include: a stop-controlled RCUT at North Gill Street and raised medians at Pine Street and North Williams Street to prevent through movements and left turns from the minor roadways across the mainline.
The project also includes three signal upgrades, a pedestrian hybrid beacon, and proposes to close East Coffee Street at SR 19/US 341 to improve pedestrian access to First Baptist Church. The project will enhance safety for pedestrian movements at these locations by providing pedestrian platforms, wheelchair ramps, pedestrian signals, and crosswalk striping. The current project design does not require additional right of way or easement.
