Mrs. Wilma Jean Wright Abernathy, 88

Mrs. Wilma Jean Wright Abernathy, 88, of Hazlehurst, passed away May 27 at Lakeview Retirement Center in Baxley.
Wilma was born July 31, 1936, in Holtville, Calif. A devoted Christian and long-time member of the Assemblies of God, Wilma lived her life with grace, love, and purpose. Whether through her work in children’s church, leading moms’ groups, or simply humming a favorite hymn, Wilma brought comfort and inspiration to those around her.
She retired from her career as an AT&T operator but never stopped giving of herself. For over a decade, she served as a helper at Hilmar Elementary School, nurturing and supporting children with the same warmth she brought to every part of her life. She was a glorious singer, often found humming gospel hymns that reflected the joy and peace she carried in her heart. Wilma had a deep love for flower gardens, fresh tomatoes, a good cup of coffee, and above all — Jesus.
She is preceded in death by her parents O.H. Davis and Ellen Elizabeth Davis; first husband of 50 years Robert E.L. Wright; second husband Dr. John Abernathy; and sisters Joann Kohen, Flodie Copp, and Carol Abernathy.
Survivors include children Deborah and Jerry Toler of Hazelhurst, Robert and Kim Wright of Hilmar, Calif., and Craig and Marcy Wright of Hughson, Calif.; brother Tommy Davis and wife Odelphia; step-children Nonnie Abernathy of Thurmond, N.C., Tamera and Darryl Wilson of Thurmond, N.C., Zishia and the late Daniel Saldano of Jonesville, N.C., John and Jamie Abernathy of Ennice, N.C., and Serena Childress of State Road, N.C.; sister-in-laws Josie Davis and husband Randy of Rouzerville, Pann., and Viola Patterson of Georgia; 36 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren. Jesus loves the little children, and so did she.
A celebration of life will be held June 7 at 1 p.m. at Parkway Baptist Church, 195 Graham Baptist Church Rd, Baxley. She will then be sent to her final resting place in California for a second service and be buried with her late husband, Bob, at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.
Flowers may be sent to the church, or monetary donations can be made in Wilma’s memory to: The Remarkable Life Foundation, 101 W Renner Rd., Suite 420, Richardson, Texas 75082.
Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home is in charge.
