Dr. Lenton Pierce

Dr. Lenton Pierce died Aug. 15.
Visitation will be held Aug. 23, 4-6 p.m. at King Brothers Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 24 at Bennett Tabernacle Holiness Church with burial in Hazlehurst Memorial Cemetery.
He was the fourth child of six born to the late Grady Lee and Queenell Knox Pierce June 29, 1951, in Jeff Davis County. He was a lifelong learner and an avid reader.
Prior to graduating from Hazlehurst High School in 1969, he worked cropping tobacco and at Jeff Davis Country Club and Jeff Davis Hospital.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1969 and served until 1973.
Upon returning to Hazlehurst in 1973, he was employed at Hazlehurst Mills.
He graduated from South Georgia College with an Associate of Science.
He earned his Bachelor of Science, Masters of Education and Specialist in Education from Albany State University.
He received his Education Specialist in Educational Leadership and Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Argosy University.
He was employed at Mitchell-Baker Elementary School, Jackson Heights Elementary School and Radium Springs Middle School where he retired in 2013 after 27 years of service.
At a young age, he was a member of Bennett Tabernacle Holiness Church where he sang in the choir.
Prior to his health declining he enjoyed traveling with family and friends.
He served as President of the Georgia Chapter of the Williams-Pierce Family Reunion.
Dr. Pierce is survived by his Fur-Baby Camron Maximilian Pierce (aka Max); siblings Dolly (Aaron) Hicks, Donald Pierce, Rietta Handsome, Starsilveneious (Franklin Sr.) Conaway, and Calvin Lee Pierce; special brother Elder Eddie Harmon; nieces and nephews Geraline Handsome, Valentino Handsome, Rufus (Sharon) Handsome III, Cassandra Handsome, Prophet Ronald (Terica) Handsome, Willie Handsome, Angela Hicks, Dr. Alisha (Kevin) Pendleton, Tammy Pierce, Donna Pierce, LaDonald Pierce, Melody Pierce, Jasmine (Chris) Lewis, Franklin Conaway Jr.; 23 great-nieces and nephews; seven great-great-nieces and -nephews; and many surrogate nieces and nephews; aunts Genether Ellis, Mary/Peggy Knox, Rosetta Knox; uncle Wille C. (Dorothy) Knox; and a host of cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by Fur-Baby Samuel Raphael Pierce (Ralph), father Grady Lee Pierce, mother Queenell Knox Pierce, paternal grandfather Brady Pierce, paternal grandmother Sadie Williams Pierce, maternal grandfather Willie Lee Knox, maternal grandmother Henrietta Knox, nephew Dr. Joseph D. Handsome, in-laws Rufus Handsome Jr. and Peggy Pierce.
