Mr. Lewis Wayne Fussell, 78

Mr. Lewis Wayne Fussell, 78, of Douglas, passed away peacefully in his sleep Oct. 9 at the home of his daughter, Mandy Lynn Fussell in Putney, following a short illness.
Mr. Fussell was born Nov. 9, 1943, to the late Rev. Roscoe Fussell and the late Helen Louise Veal Fussell. Other than his parents he was preceded in death by sister, Martha Faye Fussell, brother, Jimmy Raye Fussell and granddaughter Selina Faulkner.
Mr. Fussell, a native of Coffee County, was a former resident of Putney. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. Then he started a 33 year career as an engineer with Norfolk Southern and was a proud member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. When he wasn’t driving the train, he could be found with a chain saw in hand, loading his pulpwood truck. He held his single pilots license. Then later in life he went to work hauling pecans all over the South Georgia. But he was the happiest when he was on a tractor or burning brush piles. It didn’t matter what kind of tractor as long as it was a tractor! And it didn’t matter what size pile. If it was there, it needed to be burned. As a matter of fact, he spent his last two days on earth on his newly acquired “new” (old) tractor mowing! Mr. Fussell was a member of First Baptist Church of Putney and Calvin Key Sunday School Class.
Survivors include his wife Linda King Fussell of Douglas; children Randy D. Fussell and wife Crystal of Snipesville, and Mandy Lynn Fussell of Putney; sister Virginia Faulkner and husband Charles of Nicholls; sisters-in-law Gail Harris, Jenny Fussell and Nina Sue Cannon; uncle Henry Fussell Jr.; grandchildren Josh Fussell and wife Katelynn of Snipesville, Samantha Odum and husband Jeremy of Snipesville, Amber Gillen of Douglas and Austin Gillen of Austin, Texas; great-grandchildren Ava and Madison Odum and Crew Lewis Fussell all of Snipesville; special cat M’onKitty; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends along with his railroad brothers.
Mr. Fussell will lie-in-state Oct. 12 from noon until the funeral hour of 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Putney in Albany, 1125 Antioch Road Albany, GA with the Rev. Danny Evans officiating.
After the service Mr. Fussell will be brought back to Douglas. The local visitation will be Oct. 13 at 10-11:30 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Jeff Davis County. After the visitation, a graveside service and interment will be held at Mt. Pleasant/Byrd Cemetery in Jeff Davis County with the Rev. Danny Evans officiating.
Ricketson Funeral Home is in charge.
