Jeff Davis High wrapped up the Region 1-AA softball championship Monday in Hazlehurst with an 8-0 win over Dodge County in the first game of a double header. And then the Lady Jackets completed their undefeated region record with a 10-2 win in the second game.
Jeff Davis entered the games with a 16-0 region record while Dodge was close behind with a 15-1 mark. The Lady Jackets finished with an 18-0 record, 26-1 overall, while the Lady Indians finished 15-3 and 18-7.
Monday’s opener was close until the sixth inning as JD scored twice in the first inning and that 2-0 score held until the bottom of the fifth when Jeff Davis scored a single run. Then in the sixth the Lady Jackets erupted for five runs to put the game on ice via the run rule.
In the second game, Jeff Davis spotted Dodge to a 2-0 first inning lead and then walked away with the 10-2, 5-inning victory.
Maeleigh Burns had the hot bat in the opener, going 3-for-3 with a trio of singles and two RBI. Jaci Underwood singled and tripled, Cori Mims singled, had a sacrifice fly and drove in two runs, Analese Poole and Ella Wood both had a single and two RBI, and Jenna Miles and Laisha Hernandez both singled.
Kelsey Parlor pitched a 2-hit shutout, walking one and fanning nine.
The Lady Jacket defense played without an error.
In the second game, Underwood exploded at the plate with a run-scoring double, a 3-run homer and a run-scoring single in the fifth inning that ended the game by the run rule.
The Lady Jackets banged out 16 hits in the 5-inning game topped by Underwood’s 3-for-3, 5 RBI performance. Miles was also 3-for-3 with three singles and an RBI, Wood, Burns and Kira Buford each had two singles and an RBI, and Hernandez, Payton Thigpen, Alera Vann and Bentlee Metts each singled.
Carrie Ellen Arnold was the starting pitcher and she got off to a rocky start, giving up two runs in the first inning on a walk, a sacrifice fly and two singles. But then she settled down and retired 12 of the next 13 batters she faced to end the game with a 3-hitter. The first inning walk was the only free pass she gave up and she struck out six.
The defense again played without an error.
