Mr. David E. Miles, 81

Mr. David E. Miles, 81, passed away Nov. 20 at Hospice Savannah.
Mr. Miles was born Nov. 23, 1939, in Jeff Davis County. After graduating from Jeff Davis High School, he moved to Jacksonville, Fla., where he worked in retail for several years before his love for helping grieving families led him to employment at Peeples Funeral Home in Jacksonville. He later returned to Hazlehurst at the request of his father, Robert Miles, to join the family business, Miles Funeral Home.
After working at the family business for 19 years, David and his wife, Louise, a licensed funeral director, purchased Strickland-Bass Funeral Home in Baxley and changed the name to David E. Miles Funeral Home. David and Louise served the people of Baxley for many years before retiring to Savannah.
David was a 1975 graduate of Gupton Jones Mortuary School in Atlanta and was a member of the honorary mortuary science fraternity Pi Sigma ETA. He was a member of and served as a deacon of Woodlawn Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Miles and Maybelle Rogers and a granddaughter, Loraine Womble.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Louise Miles of Savannah; daughters, Teri Bell (Steve) of Savannah, and Maria Miles (Russell) of Midway; grandchildren, Larry Summerlin (Jenny) of Canton, Jeremiah Womble (Ameigh) of Statesboro, Shane Bookhardt (Anna) of Rincon, Megan King (Joel) of Hazlehurst, Amiee’ Green (Troy) of Hazlehurst, and Hannah Bookhardt of Savannah; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Virginia McEachin of Hazlehurst: several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Nov. 23 from the Nobles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rick Brown and the Rev. Robert Wigley officiating.
Interment was in Hazlehurst City Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Larry Summerlin, Shane Bookhardt, Jeremiah Womble, Lamar Carter, John Lawrence, and Jim Lawrence.
Honorary pallbearers were all in attendance.
Nobles Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge.
