Lady Jackets off to 2-0 start

After their home opener was rained out last Thursday, the Jeff Davis High softball team opened play Saturday in a Tattnall County tournament, winning both games they played.
The Lady Jackets defeated Class 5A Wayne County 9-1 and Class 6A Glynn Academy 5-2.
In the opener against Wayne, Jeff Davis led 4-1 through four innings and exploded for five runs in the fifth to win the battle of Jackets in a runaway.
Jenna Miles opened the top of the first inning with a double, stole third and scored as Ella Wood grounded out. After Analese Poole reached on an error, Maeleigh Burns singled to score Poole, making it 2-0.
A Burns single in the third, a walk, two wild pitches and a Payton Thigpen single pushed the JD lead to 4-0.
Jeff Davis blew the game open in the fifth as the lead grew from 4-1 to 9-1. Burns, Kalleigh Sellers and Alicia Lilliott opened the inning with singles. After an out, Laisha Hernandez and Miles both singled followed by an Ella Wood run-scoring fielder’s choice and it was 9-1. Jeff Davis had six singles in the inning.
Burns was 3-for-3 with an RBI, Miles was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Hernandez had a pair of singles. Wood singled and drove in two runs, Thigpen and Sellers both singled in a run, and Jaci Underwood and Lilliott both singled in a 12-hit attack.
On the mound, Kelsey Parlor picked up the win, going four inning and giving up one run on four hits, walking one and striking out four.
Against Glynn, the Lady Jackets found themselves down 2-0 after two and a half innings but they bounced back with four runs in the bottom of the third and added a sixth inning insurance run to win 5-2.
Thigpen reached on an error to start the third and after back-to-back singles by Bentlee Metts and Hernandez, the bases were loaded. Miles then drew a walk for JD’s first run. Wood followed with a sacrifice fly to push Metts across the plate to tie the game 2-2. Underwood singled to put the Lady Jackets on top and Miles stole home to make it 4-2.
A run-scoring double by Burns in the sixth upped the score to 5-2.
Jeff Davis managed only four hits, Burns’ double and singles by Underwood, Metts and Hernandez. Wood drove in a run with her sacrifice fly, and Miles, Underwood and Burns each had an RBI.
Kelsey Parlor started on the mound and picked up the win. She went four innings, giving up two runs on four hits, walking none and striking out one. Burns threw the final two innings, blanking Glynn on one hit, a strikeout and two walks.
