Mrs. Mildred Veronica Hill Wilcox, 82

Services for Mrs. Mildred Veronica Hill Wilcox, 82, who died Sept. 29, were held Oct. 6 at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.
Pastor Overseer Elgin Lanier Dixon gave the eulogy and Pastor Cyprus O’Neal presided at the services with burial at Hill Memorial Garden.
Mrs. Wilcox, born in Hazlehurst, was the daughter of the late Eschol and Onie Strong Hill, sixth child of nine children. At an early age, she joined Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, serving on the Usher Board, and taught Sunday School. She graduated from Hazlehurst High School and attended Albany State College (University). Mrs. Wilcox worked at various jobs but found her life calling when she began working as the Lead Teacher of Hazlehurst Headstart retiring in 2000 after 30 years of service. She was a member of Christian Pilgrim Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star and Heroines of Jericho. She was involved in voter registration drives, worked with the Summer Lunch Program and any activities that her grandchildren were involved in. Preceding her in death were her parents; her brothers, Minister Lafayette Hill and Minister James Eschol Hill; and her sister, Wilhelmina Hill Parrish.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Charles Wilcox of Hazlehurst; daughter, Sonya Juliette Wilcox Fluellen and her husband, Watson Fluellen Il of Grovetown; grandchildren, Michelle Selena Fluellen of Saint Louis, MO, Watson Fluellen III and Bryan Charles Fluellen, both of Grovetown; sisters, Amenzerolle “Penny” Thomas of Surrency, and Carolyn “Sugar” Mitchell of Hazlehurst; brothers, Minister John (Mary) Hill of Atlanta, Deacon Robert (Phyllis) Hill of Hazlehurst and Dr. Genwood F. (Betty) Hill of Fort Valley; two sisters-in-law, Helen W. Hill and Minister Rosa Wilcox, both of Hazlehurst and a host of relatives and friends.
Rendering music included the Combined Choir, Calvin Wilcox Jr., Janet Moses, and Denise Dixon.
Active pallbearers were Gregory Thomas, Charles A. Mitchell, Reuben Kirby, Mickey Wilcox, Jurad Hill, Robert “Bobby” Hill II, Dr. Cornelius Wooten, James A. Hill, Frank Givens, Wilson Thomas, Calvin Wilcox Sr., Bruce Mitchell, Kelvin Hill, and Robford Hill.
Honorary pallbearers were Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church Deacons and Evergreen Freewill Baptist Church Deacons.
Thornton’s Funeral Home of Hazlehurst was in charge of arrangements.
