Jeff Davis High’s baseball season came to a heart-breaking end last Thursday in Social Circle as the Yellow Jackets fell 3-2 in 11 innings and 6-3 in 9 innings as both teams were stretched to their limits before the Redskins prevailed in the exhausting 2-game series.
While Jeff Davis ended its season with a 15-19 record, Social Circle improved to 25-8 and advanced to the Elite Eight facing Worth County 26-8 this week in Sylvester.
The 3-2 opening game loss was especially frustrating as the Jackets out-hit the Redskins 8-4 and lefty Seth Saunders pitched a 3-hitter, going 9 inning on the mound and throwing 110 pitches. It was Saunders’ best performance of the season.
And the Jackets wasted numerous opportunities to score. Their 1st run came in the opening inning as Treyton Webster walked, went to 2nd on a Zack Hulett sacrifice bunt, advanced to 3rd on Tye Rea’s ground out and scored as Jeremiah Davis reached first on an error.
The Jackets got their lead-off batter on base in the 2nd, loaded the bases with one out in the 3rd, got a lead-off single in the 4th, and had runners at 1st and 3rd in the 5th but had a runner thrown out at home.
In the 7th, trailing 2-1, Webster started things with a double, took 3rd on a Hulett sacrifice and scored to tie the game on a Davis single to center.
In the 8th Karter Galbreath got a 2-out double but couldn’t advance.
In the 9th, Zack Hulett got a 1-out single and when he tried to steal second, Rea was called out at the plate as the umpire ruled he interfered with the catcher’s throw to 2nd. And Hulett was sent back to 1st.
In the 10th and 11th innings the Jackets had no baserunners.
Social Circle won the game in the bottom of the 11th with an unearned run.
Zack Hulett had a pair of singles, Karter Galbreath and Webster doubled, Davis, Josh Worthington, Jacob Laney and Andrew Hulett each singled and Rea had the only RBI.
Saunders gave up 2 runs on 3 hits, walked one and struck out 8. Laney took the loss in relief. He pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up an unearned run on 1 hit, walked two and struck out none.
In the 2nd game, both teams scored 3 runs in the 1st 3 innings and then went through 5 scoreless innings.
The Jackets scored 2 in the 2nd as Davis led off with a single, pinch runner Braylon Varnadore went to 2nd on Worthington’s sac bunt, and scored on Laney’s double. Laney scored on Brayden Picanso’s single. JD left the bases loaded in the inning.
The Jackets other run came in the 3rd when Rea singled, went to 3rd on a Worthington double and scored as Laney grounded out to 2nd.
Jeff Davis left 2 on in the 4th and one on in the 5th. The Jackets then went down in order in the 6th, 7th and 8th.
Social Circle got 4 of their 9 hits in the top of the 9th as they scored 3 runs.
In the bottom of the inning, Galbreath led off with a single and 2 outs later went to 2nd as Zack Hulett was hit by a pitch. But the game ended on a strikeout.
Picanso led JD at the plate with 2 singles and an RBI. Laney had a double and 2 RBI, Worthington doubled, and Webster, Rea, Davis and Galbreath each singled.
Zack Hulett started on the mound and went 6 innings, giving up 3 runs on 5 hits, walking 5 and fanning five. Peyton Jones suffered the loss. He pitched 3 innings, giving up 3 runs on 4 hits, no walks and 2 strikeouts.
