JOSH WORTHINGTON GETS HIT BY A PITCH

Jeff Davis High’s baseball team got its first victory of the season Saturday with a 6-5 home victory over Callaway.
The win came after the Jackets had lost 5-4 to Appling County Tuesday in Baxley and 7-1 to visiting Heard County Friday.
Saturday’s game pitted a pair of perennial baseball powerhouses who were both off to uncharacteristic 0-5 starts.
Callaway got off to a 4-0 lead in the second inning as the Cavaliers got their 4 runs with only 1 hit. A trio of walks, a wild pitch and a throwing error on a pickoff attempt spotted Callaway to the early lead.
The highlights of the early innings came when both coaches heatedly argued with the officials over questionable calls that hurt both teams.
The Jackets tied the game with a 4-run 3rd inning. Brayden Picanso reached first on an error with one out, Jacob Laney singled and Zack Hulett doubled in Picanso to make it 4-1. Treyton Webster then singled to score Laney to make it 4-2. An error pushed another run across the plate and another error tied the game at 4-all.
In the bottom of the 4th with Callaway ahead 5-4, Picanso got a 2-out single, Laney followed with a double, Picanso scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and Laney came home on a Webster single with what turned out to be the winning run.
The Jackets out-hit the Cavaliers 9-4. Webster and Laney both had 2 singles and a double, with Webster driving in 2 runs. Hulett had a double and an RBI and Picanso singled twice.
Zack Hulett had a strong outing on the mound. He threw 5 innings, giving up 3 earned runs on 4 hits, walking 4 and striking out 5. Peyton Jones pitched the final 2 innings, retiring all 6 batters he faced, 2 on strikeouts.
In the 5-4 loss to Appling, the Pirates got only one earned run as the Jackets committed 3 errors.
The Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd as Jeremiah Davis singled, pinch runner Gunner Partin went to 2nd on a Karter Galbreath sacrifice, took 3rd on a passed ball and scored on a Tye Rea ground out.
Jacob Laney drew a bases-loaded walk in the 5th for the Jackets 2nd run. In the 6th Josh Worthngton singled, Davis doubled, Galbreath drove in a run with a ground out and Rea got an RBI single.
Davis had a single and a double to lead JD at the plate. Rea had a single and 2 RBI, Webster and Worthington singled, and Galbreath had an RBI.
Webster started on the mound and did not give up an earned run. He went 4 innings, giving up 3 hits, walking 2 and striking out 6. Laney pitched the last 2 innings, yielding one run on 2 hits, no walks and 3 strikeouts.
Against Heard County, the Jackets managed only two hits, singles by Tye Rea and Zack Hulett.
Jeff Davis’ only run came in the first inning without a hit. Zack Hulett was hit by the second pitch he faced and stole 2nd after two pickoff attempts. Webster then hit a grounder to second that was booted and Hulett went home with the Jackets’ only run of the game.
The Jackets got 2 runners on with 2 outs in the 4th when Rea singled and Galbreath was hit by a pitch. The runners advanced to 2nd and 3rd but a strikeout ended the inning.
JD loaded the bases with 1 out in the 5th as Picanso reached on an error, Hulett singled and Webster drew a 4-pitch walk. But Heard’s Veni struck out the next 2 batters to snuff the threat.
Heard took an early lead with a 2-run first and scored in 4 separate innings for the 7-1 victory.
