Cage teams drop games

Both Jeff Davis Highs girls and boys basketball teams dropped their contests in the Hugh McBride Basketball Classic played in Hazlehurst.
The Lady Jackets fell to Toombs County 47-31 and Wayne County 60-6 and the Jacket boys lost to Turner County 56-54 and Camden County 74-34.
The Lady Jackets got off to a good start against Toombs County, leading 11-9 after the first quarter with a balanced scoring attack. The Lady Bulldogs worked their way to a 20-17 halftime lead and then blew the game open in the 3rd quarter, outscoring Jeff Davis 21-4 in the quarter and eventually won by 16, 47-31.
Claire Stinson’s career high 16 points led the Lady Jacket scoring. Latrice Shivers had 7, Bree Coney 6 and Markyla Durden, Brylee Wyatt and Zianna Mincey 2 each.
Ariana Hill topped Toombs County’s scoring with 23 points.
In a battle of Lady Yellow Jackets, Wayne County raced to a 19-6 first quarter lead over Jeff Davis’ girls and, from there on out, the Lady Jackets from Hazlehurst went ice cold from the field and failed to score again.
Bree Coney had a first quarter 3-point play, Claire Stinson went 2-for-4 at the charity stripe and Markyla Durden hit one of two free throws for all the Jeff Davis points. The JD Lady Jackets went 0-for-4 on free throws over the last three quarters.
M. Everett led Wayne with 20 points while J. Fullmore added 15.
Coach Thomas McAboy’s Jacket boys trailed by 7 entering the final quarter against undefeated Turner County when they staged a rally that came up 2 points short. JJ Benjamin scored 5 points in the final quarter and JT Bryant hit a pair of field goals. But the Jackets missed 3 of 4 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal their loss.
Benjamin and Bryant led the Jeff Davis scoring with 13 points each. Kolby Jarrell had 9, Jaiden West 7, Mark Durden 5, A.J. Sampson 4, Jaiden King 2 and Amare Burney 1. The Jackets hit 6-of-14 free throws.
Quantavious Prather led Turner County with 13 points and Curtis Grant had 12. Turner, coached by former Jeff Davis High basketball coach Will Johnson, went 13-for-22 at the free throw line.
Camden County’s Class 6A boys team came into the contest with a 3-0 record, having won their first three games by an average of over 28 points per game. They easily blew past the Yellow Jackets by 40 points, 74-34.
Last night (Tuesday), Jeff Davis traveled to Lyons to take on Toombs County. The Bulldog boys were 4-1 going intp the game, having lost 48-39 to undefeated Turner County. Toombs’ wins came against Bacon County 86-31 and 58-44, Tattnall County 39-38 and Metter 68-40.
The Toombs girls were 1-4 with their only win coming against Jeff Davis 47-31. The Lady Bulldogs lost to Bacon County 49-42, Bryan County 77-47, Tattnall County 68-28 and Ware County 58-40.
