School Board meets
Board of Education meetings each month give school personnel an opportunity to laud the efforts of their young students. And also provide parents, grandparents and other loved ones an opportunity to glow with pride at those students’ accomplishments.
At last week’s board meeting, second grade student Landon Waldon opened the meeting by giving the invocation in front of the board and the crowd gathered in the high school auditorium. Tina Nelms, School Superintendent Dr. Chris Roppe’s Administrative Assistant, prepares the minutes of the board meeting each month and she described young Landon by saying he “showed great courage and did an excellent job.”
She described the group of Primary School students who led the Pledge of Allegiance as demonstrating “courage, leadership and bravery.”
Leading the pledge were Pre-K students Jacie Bush and Greyson Knox, 1st graders Abbie Moore, Enrique Cruz and Ryder Spikes, and 2nd graders Joseph Carroll, Landon Waldon and Clara Guinn.
Elementary School Principal T.J Mercer recognized the top readers from each grade level in the Accelerated Reader Program. Recognized were:
3rd Grade Dylan Espino Jimenez – 1st; Sammi Parker – 2nd and Brooklyn Smith – 3rd.
4th Grade MacKenzie Lewis – 1st, Taylor Reese – 2nd and Guadalupe Register – 3rd.
5th Grade Sadie Mercer – 1st, Kimber Morrison – 2nd and Brooklyn Maxey – 3rd.
Dr. Roppe presented the March attendance report, saying the average attendance was 93.62%.
Mary Susan Arnold provided an update on the Special Education Department. She shared upcoming events, including Jason’s Day April 16 and the Special Olympics April 24. Ms. Arnold also recognized Mrs. Ali Coleman for her participation in the Special Education Administrator Development Academy. In addition, Ms. Arnold recognized Mrs. Brenda Brantley for being named the recipient of the Debra Brantley Award.
Garrett White reported that the Strategic Planning teams held their final meeting and the completed plan will be presented to the Board at the next meeting.
Dr. Adam Kirby gave an update on the new primary school which is progressing as expected. Dr. Roppe gave an update on a meeting with the city for off-site utilities.
Dr. Kirby gave an update on the land clearing between the middle and new primary schools and the land adjacent to the practice football fields that were damaged from the storm.
The board unanimously approved Board Policy Update: IBB Charter Schools which will sit for public comment until the May 11 board meeting; Board Policy Update: IFBG: Internet Acceptable Use – final approval. This policy sat for public comment since March 20. No public comments were given.
Chief Financial Officer Joshua Worth presented the February reports which the board approved.
The board accepted the resignation of Pre-K paraprofessional Elise Belle Ogle and the retirement of maintenance employee Jack Rowell.
Dr. Roppe informed the board of a called meeting April 30 at 12:00 p.m.
