The Jeff Davis High School varsity tennis teams hosted West Laurens last week for Senior Night, earning victories on both sides. The Lady Yellow Jackets secured a 4–1 win, while the boys team battled through several three-set matches to claim a narrow 3–2 victory.
Following the matches, the program recognized its senior class: Ava Coleman, Caidon Diaz, Millie Keyton, Cori Mims, and Landon Solomon. Head coach Mary Katherine Brown reflected on their contributions, noting that their dedication, leadership, and perseverance have helped strengthen the program and set a standard for future teams.
The week also highlighted a major milestone, as senior Cori Mims signed to continue her tennis career at Truett McConnell University.
Mims has been a standout throughout her career, compiling an impressive 84–11 overall record. She began as a freshman at No. 2 singles with a 21–3 record on a state championship team, followed by a 23–2 sophomore season as the team finished as state runner-up. As a junior, she moved to No. 1 singles, posting a 23–4 record and again helping lead the team to a runner-up finish. She currently holds a 17–2 record in her senior season at the top position.
Coach Brown emphasized the significance of Mims’ achievement, noting she is the first female athlete during her tenure to sign a tennis scholarship and the first from Jeff Davis to advance to the collegiate level since Jordan Carter in 2010. She is also among the few players from the program in recent years to continue her career at the next level.
Beyond her accomplishments on the court, Mims has made a lasting impact through her leadership, work ethic, and character, serving as a role model for her teammates and representing Jeff Davis with pride.
