Hulett pitches near-perfect game

Jeff Davis High junior Zack Hulett turned in one of the best pitching performances in Yellow Jacket baseball history Friday in Hazlehurst in a 7-0 win over Bacon County.
Hulett threw a 1-hit shutout, facing the minimum 21 batters in the 7-inning contest. The Red Raiders’ only hit was a 4th inning single to left by Bacon shortstop Scottland Hennessey. And Hennessey was erased from the bases on the very next pitch in a 4-6-3 double play from 2nd baseman Brady Stevers, to shortstop Brayden Picanso to 1st baseman Tye Rea.
The JD defense backed up Hulett playing without an error. Of course, with Hulett fanning 12 batters and 2 pop foul outs, the Jacket defense had only 7 opportunities to field a ball hit into fair territory. Hennessey’s single was one of only two balls hit out of the infield.
Stevers, at second, was the busiest defender as he fielded four ground balls.
Hulett finished the game strongly, fanning the last 8 batters he faced.
At the plate, the Jackets had 12 hits, led by Rea and Karter Galbreath with a double and 2 singles each. Galbreath drove in 2 runs and Rea 1.
Josh Worthington had a single and a double, Treyton Webster had a double and 2 RBI, Hulett had a double and an RBI, Jeremiah Davis had a single and an RBI, and Jacob Laney singled.
Friday’s win gave the Yellow Jackets a 2 games to one edge in the 3-game series with Bacon.
The series opened Tuesday in Hazlehurst with the Yellow Jackets taking a 9-2 victory.
The game was a close one until the bottom of the sixth when Jeff Davis scored 6 runs to increase their lead from 3-2 to 9-2.
The Jackets sent 12 batters to the plate in the 6th and their 6 runs came on just one hit, a Rea single. Bacon’s pitchers gave up 6 walks, a hit batter and 3 wild pitches, and there was a fielding error and a passed ball.
The Jackets’ 9 runs came on just 3 hits, a Worthington double and 2 singles by Rea. Rea drove in two runs and Hulett and Laney both had one RBI.
