Baseball takes 2 of 3 against Berrien

Jeff Davis High’s baseball team moved into its region schedule last week, winning 2 of 3 games against Berrien. Last Tuesday, the Jackets lost 1-0 in Nashville. Thursday in Hazlehurst JD took a 4-0 win and Friday in Nashville the Jackets won 4-0.
The Jackets improved to 5-7 overall and 2-1 in region play. Berrien fell to 6-6 and 1-2.
In the opener, Peyton Jones lost a heart-breaker as he threw a 6-hitter, giving up only one run. At the plate, the Jackets hit the ball hard but couldn’t find openings in the Rebel defense. Karter Galbreath and Treyton Webster got the only hits for JD, both singles.
In the 2nd inning the Jackets got their best opportunity to score. Galbreath singled and Jeremiah Davis was hit by a pitch to put 2 on with 2 outs, but the Jackets couldn’t get a run across the plate.
Thursday in Hazlehurst, Seth Saunders pitched a gem. He faced only 24 batters, giving up a pair of singles and a walk for the only Rebel baserunners. He fanned 13 batters. Berrien had runners on base in the 3rd, 5th and 6th innings, but Saunders retired the side in order in the 4 other innings.
The game was scoreless through 5 innings and the Jackets got all 3 of their runs in the 6th.
Zack Hulett and Webster opened the inning with singles and Tye Rea reach on an error on a sacrifice bunt to load the bases. An error scored Zack Hulett, sending Rea and Webster to 2nd and 3rd. After a ground out and a strikeout, Galbreath singled to short to score Rea. After Andrew Hulett was hit by a pitch to load the bases again, Rea came home on an error to make it 3-0.
The Jackets got 8 hits, all singles. Galbreath had 2 singles and an RBI, Zack Hulett singled twice, and Picanso, Davis, Webster and Josh Worthington each singled.
Webster and Zack Hulett combined for a 4-hit shutout Friday in Nashville. Both walked only one batter, Webster fanned 10 in 5 innings and Hulett whiffed 4 batters in 2 innings.
Again, the Jackets got all their runs in one inning, this time in the 3rd with only one hit.
Andrew Hulett started the inning with a walk and an error on Brayden Picanso’s sacrifice bunt put 2 on with no outs. An out later, Zack Hulett was safe on an error as Andrew Hulett scored to make it 1-0. After Webster walked to load the bases, Picanso came home on a passed ball. Josh Worthington followed with a line drive to left to score Chaney and Zack Hulett to up the score to 4-0.
The Jackets got their 4 runs with only 3 hits. Worthington’s 2-run single and a single and a double by Davis.
