Jeff Davis High’s basketball teams closed out their regular seasons Friday night splitting their games with visiting Appling County.
The Lady Jackets fell to Appling 52-43 while the Yellow Jacket boys breezed to a 70-49 win.
Jeff Davis’ girls finished the regular season with a 5-20 record and played Monday night in Alma in the opening round of the region tournament. The Jacket boys finished with a 17-8 record, good enough for 2nd place in the region standings and received a bye to the semifinals of the region tournament this Thursday in Fitzgerald.
The Lady Jackets fell behind early to the Lady Pirates, and were down 17-6 after one quarter and 31-19 at intermission. But they fought back valiantly in the second half and cut the 12-pt. halftime deficit to just 5 points on several occasions in the 4th quarter before Appling finally pulled away to the 9-pt. win. In an early season matchup in Baxley Jeff Davis lost by 16 and last week’s improved performance came without two of the Lady Jacket senior starters playing in the game.
Bree Coney and Brylee Wyatt both hit in double digits for the Lady Jackets with 18 and 11 points respectively. Both hit a trio of 3-pt. shots. Anna Grace Alligood, Marlee Burch and Zijanna Mincey had 4 apiece and Markyla Durden added 2.
Shamiah Barnum topped Appling with 23 points.
In the boys game, JD jumped out to a quick 1st quarter lead before the Pirates fought back to within 19-15 at the first break. A.J. Sampson led a 2nd quarter surge that gave the Jackets a 35-21 halftime lead. Appling tried to fight back in the second half but Jeff Davis pulled away down the final stretch for the easy win.
J.J. Benjamin led four players in double figures with 16 points. J.T. Bryant had 15, Sampson 13 and Kolby Jarrell 11. Jaiden West scored 8, all in the 1st half including a pair of long 3-pt. shots in the opening quarter. Zan Coney, Preston Godwin and Lee Shivers had 2 each and Jaiden King pitched in a free throw.
Al’Darrius Howell led the Pirates with 24 points.
