Mr. Raymond Tillon Smith, 78

Mr. Raymond Tillon Smith, 78, of Hazlehurst, passed away Nov. 22 at Jeff Davis Hospital.
Mr. Smith was born July 2, 1946, in Metter to the late Sam Tillon Smith and Louise Dowd Smith. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, retiring after 24 years of active duty as a Chief Gunner’s Mate. A Vietnam veteran, he received numerous medals and awards throughout his distinguished service and traveled all over the world before settling in Hazlehurst in 1998.
In his retirement, he enjoyed a full and meaningful life. He loved fishing, hunting, and going on cruises with his wife. He was an excellent cook — especially known for his BBQ — and was affectionately called “Chef” by family and friends. Raymond was a wonderful husband and father, remembered for being strong-willed, stoic, honest and deeply dedicated to the people he loved.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Marie Adams.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 54 years Debra Smith of Hazlehurst; son Samuel Ray Smith of Statesboro; daughter Jennifer Nordstrom (Rodney) of Odum; brother Wayne Smith (Sheryl) of McRae; and sister Cathy Coe (Michael) of McRae.
The family will receive friends in the chapel of Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home Dec. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m.
