SAN DIEGO – Petty Officer 1st Class Jessie Caulson, a native of Jeff Davis County, serves aboard USS Oakland, a U.S. Navy warship operating out of San Diego, Calif.
Caulson graduated from Jeff Davis High School in 2007.
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Jeff Davis County.
“Growing up in Georgia, everyone is family-oriented, and it taught me the good, the bad, and the hardships, and that if I wanted something, I had to go get it,” Caulson said.
Caulson joined the Navy 17 years ago. Today, Caulson serves as a boatswain’s mate.
“Growing up in a small town, I knew I wanted something more–a purpose, a challenge, and a chance to see the world beyond what I’d always known,” Caulson said. “One day, I saw a Navy commercial, and it struck a chord with me. The idea of serving my country, gaining skills, and being a part of something bigger than myself was exactly what I was looking for. That moment set me on the path to join, and I’ve been committed to making the most of that decision ever since.”
A Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), USS Oakland is a fast and agile warship designed to operate in near-shore environments to counter 21st-century threats. Crews aboard the ship can operate unmanned aerial systems and unmanned underwater vehicles. These ships can operate independently or in high-threat scenarios as part of a networked battle force that includes larger, multi-mission surface combatants such as cruisers and destroyers.
