School board meets
At Monday night’s meeting of the Jeff Davis County Board of Education, Primary School Principal Dr. Shelly McBride recognized one student from each homeroom for good behavior.
Recognized were Brittany Acosta Trejo, Rafael Barrios, Evie Brantley, Sabrina Brown, Bryn Bullard, Allison Caballero-Quijada, Adriana Cabrera, Joseph Carroll, Kambree Carter, Kimber Carter, Kashden Chapman, Andrea DeLaCruz Rubio, Paavan Desai, Raylyn Dukes, Preston Edwards, Jace Gardner, Amora Hall, Braxton Hand, Mason Hebert, Alexander Hilario Dedho, Alissa Hinnant, Castiel Johnson, Amelia Landers, Ellie Mason, James McEathron, Liliana Mendoza, Aurora Padgett, Victoria Reyes, Essence Robinson, Bettany Roblero, Carlos “Rex” Rodriguez, Jared Roland, Charleigh Kate Sears, Malaina Varnadoe, Leyla Vasquez, Briana Vega, Asher Walker, Rayleigh Walker and Grayson Wilcox.
School Superintendent Dr. Chris Roppe presented the August attendance report, indicating that the average attendance was 95.09%.
Dr. Adam Kirby, Assistant Superintendent/Facilities Director, gave an update on the transportation department highlighting the Georgia State Patrol Motor Carrier Compliance Division Bus Inspection. The inspection was one of the best on record with no major defects found, a testament to the hard work and attention to detail of maintenance and transportation teams.
Strict adherence to daily inspection protocols continues to be maintained ensuring the safety and reliability of the bus fleet.
Regular safety evaluations remain a priority, reinforcing the department’s commitment to ensuring drivers uphold the highest safety standards and follow protocols.
All elementary school bus safety classes have been completed. The sessions are vital in teaching young students safe practices on and around school buses.
Dr. Kirby also gave an update on the district’s capital projects. Work on the new primary school is progressing. Currently metal framing is going up, CMU is being laid, and underground utilities are finishing up. The auxiliary gym repairs are scheduled to be completed by the end of October and the construction of the tennis field house has begun.
The following items were all unanimously approved by the board: Timber Tax Resolution; School Nutrition Meal Prices; School Nutrition Maintenance Repairs; School Nutrition Summer Salaries; ESS Rate of Pay – School Nutrition’ Facilities Use Request – Hazlehurst-JD Chamber of Commerce; Board Policy Updates Final Approval, Update to Policy IFBG: Internet Acceptable Use, Update to Policy IBB: Charter Schools. Chief Financial Officer Joshua Worth presented the July reports
The board accepted the retirement of Pre-K paraprofessional Sheila Wilcox and the resignation of Pre-K paraprofessional Emily Varnadoe.
The board approved the long-term leave request of high school School Nutrition Program assistant manager Linda Alligood.
And the recommendation was approved to hire Jeffery Coleman as a Transportation/Bus Driver.
