Lady Jacket Tracksters win Region championship
The Jeff Davis High track and field teams competed last Tuesday at the Region 1AA Championship hosted by Worth County. Both the girls and boys teams had an outstanding performance as a team.
The Lady Jackets won the Region Championship in exciting fashion as they were 3.5 points behind Worth County going into the final event. The Lady Jackets needed to finish at least two places ahead of the Lady Rams in the 4×400 Relay to secure the region title. The Lady Jackets ran their best time of the year to secure 4×400 relay win but still needed help from the other teams to make sure the Lady Rams finished in third place or lower and they did as both Cook County and Sumter County also ran their best times of the year to push Worth to a fourth place finish. The help from the other teams pushed the Lady Jackets point total ahead of Worth for the Region Championship.
Girls final teams standings
Jeff Davis 177.00
Worth 175.50
Fitzgerald 89.00
Cook 73.50
Sumter 59.50
Dodge 47.50
Berrien 34.00
The boys team captured the Region Runner-Up title in a similar dramatic fashion. While Worth County easily walked away with the boys’ team title, the Jackets battled with Fitzgerald for the runner-up spot. Fitzgerald took a six point lead into the final 4×400 relay. The Jackets needed to win the 4×400 relay and have the Fitzgerald team finish in sixth place. The Yellow Jacket team was running with alternate Payton Parlor, as his brother, Hayden went down with a hamstring injury during the 4×100 relay. Despite the circumstances the team dominated the event winning by almost six seconds and Fitzgerald faltered and finished in sixth place, allowing Jeff Davis to jump Fitzgerald by one point for the runner-up title.
