Jackets sweep Westside

Jeff Davis High’s baseball team swept by Westside of Augusta last week 13-3, 19-0
to advance to the second round of the 2024 Georgia High School State Playoffs. The wins ran JD’s win streak to 21 games. The Yellow Jackets (21-7) play Pierce County (18-10) in the second round this week in Hazlehurst.
The first game against the Patriots was closer than the final score indicates as the score was tied 3-3 through 3 1/2 innings. But the Jackets scored 10 runs over the next 2 1/2 innings to win in six innings by the run rule.
The Jacket bats bombarded Westside in the second game as the Jeff Davis breezed to the easy win.
In the opener, a Carter Mullis 2-run double gave the Jackets a 2-0 lead in the first and an Ethan Picanso sacrifice fly added a run in the second. Meanwhile, Westside got an unearned run off starter Andrew White in the second and tied the game 3-3 with a 2-run homer in the second.
But the Jacket offense began to shine in the fourth. RBI singles by Eli Saunders and Ethan Picanso and a Duke Stone sacrifice fly made it 6-3 in the fourth.
In the fifth, an error, a Treyton Webster single and a Jude Worthington double upped the tally to 7-3. Three batters later, Picanso ripped a bases-loaded triple down the right field line to make it 10-3 and Hayden Turner followed with another triple to score Picanso.
In the bottom of the sixth, Jackson Sayer ripped a line drive that was misplayed by the left fielder and two runs crossed the plate to end the game by the run rule.
Picanso led the Jackets at the plate with two singles, a triple and five RBI. Webster had a single and a double, Mullis had a double and two RBI, Turner had a triple and one RBI, Worthington and Saunders both had a single and an RBI, Sayer singled and Stone drove in a run.
Andrew White went the distance on the mound. He gave up two earned runs on one hit, walked six and fanned nine.
Neither team scored in the first inning of the second game but then it was all Jeff Davis.
The Jackets put 10 runs on the board in the second as Mullis doubled, Webster singled, Worthington was hit by a pitch and Saunders followed with a 3-run double. After a Sayer single, Picanso ripped a 2-run double. Following a pair of walks, Alex Mason and Mullis hit back-to-back 2-run singles. A Patriot error made it 10-0.
Turner and Stone led off the third with back-to-back singles and then Mason lofted a 3-run homer over the left field fence. Mullis then doubled and Webster and Worthington had consecutive singles to up the score to 15-0. After a walk and a Sayer single, Picanso drove home a run with a sac fly. After Colby Beach plated a run on a ground out, Mason drove in a run with a double and Kamo Munsayac was safe on an error to score the 19th run.
Mason had the hot bat as he had a single, a double, a home run and six RBI. Mullis had single, a pair of doubles and two RBI, Webster had two singles and an RBI, Sayer had two singles, Saunders had a double and three RBI, Worthington had a single and an RBI, Turner and Stone both singled, and Beach drove in a run.
Mason hurled a 2-hit shutout, walking one and fanning seven.
