Hernandez, Baker lead thinclads

Jeff Davis High’s Laisha Hernandez and Lewis Baker had outstanding performances in the 2nd Annual Big Play Slay Invitational track meet Friday at Brunswick High School in Brunswick.
Hernandez won the 300 meter hurdles and Davis took first place in the shot put.
The wins were huge for the Jacket seniors as they were competing against not just Class 2A teams like Appling, Brantley and Pierce counties but also against 3A Johnson of Savannah, 4A teams (Southeast Bulloch and Wayne County), 5A teams (Jenkins-Savannah, Bradwell Institute and Ware County), 6A teams (Brunswick and Glynn Academy) and 7A teams (Camden County and Lowndes County).
Hernandez ran the distance in a time of 46.40, edging out Jada Patterson of Pierce County who had a time of 46.80.
Baker’s winning throw in the shot put was 48 ft., 1 in., almost a foot longer than second place finisher J’shawn Towns of Brunswick who had a throw of 47 ft., 2 in.
Other top 10 finishers for JDHS in the 14-team meet were:
Shantie Lewis, 2nd girls shot put, 35-06, just two inches behind the first place winner from Ware County;
Ellie Kate Marchant, 4th in the 1600 meter run;
Rhiana Garcia, 4th in the 100 meter hurdles and 7th in the long jump;
Carley Thompson, 5th in the discus;
Iyuri Sampson, 5th in the shot put;
Avery Haley, 7th in the 3200 meter run;
Ava Bohannon, 9th in the discus;
Marley Powell, 10th in the 3200 meter run;
Ali Lewis, 10th in the 400 meter dash.
And the girls 4×800 meter relay team captured a second place finish.
