Netters face Pierce, Brantley

The Jeff Davis Yellow Jacket tennis teams opened the season this past week with road trips to Pierce County and Brantley County.
On Jan. 30, the boys team lost a close one to the Bears with a 2-3 match score. Coach Mary Katherine Brown applauded the play of senior Bryaun Reyes with his win at the number 2 singles spot.
“Bryaun never gets out-worked on the court. He always gives one hundred percent.”
JD’s ladies came home with their first win of the season defeating Pierce 4-1. Coach Brown bragged on the skills of Lexi Girtman in this match.
“Lexi had a tough match to open the season. She has played this particular girl from Pierce for three years straight with varying outcomes. However, she was prepared for the task. She went on the court, and she took care of business in straight sets.”
The Yellow Jackets went to Brantley County Feb. 1. The Yellow Jacket boys lost big against the Herons in this match up with a 0-5 score. Coach Brown and Mims both gave praise to sophomore De’Shon Collins playing in his first singles match at the varsity level at the number 3 singles spot.
“De’Shon competed and showed a lot of effort in his match. He really impressed me, and I see a lot of potential in what he can bring to our team in the future years.”
The Lady Jackets came home with a 4-1 win against the Herons. Coach Brown commended the play of sophomore Cori Mims playing in a tight singles match against Raylee Strickland from Brantley.
“Cori played very well in this match. She had a close second set, and she constantly played aggressively to eventually beat her opponent 7-5 in the second set completing her straight set win.”
Jeff Davis High School Varsity guys and gals hosted their first home match Tuesday. The Jackets hosted Cook County, their first region 1AA opponent.
