Jacket Boys Win In Overtime

Jeff Davis High’s boys basketball team took a 66-55 overtime win over Worth County Friday night in Hazlehurst, upsetting the visiting Rams who entered the game with a 6-2 Region 1-AA record, second best in the region.
The victory avenged an 82-71 loss to the Rams in Sylvester Jan. 27. In other action, Jeff Davis fell to region-leading Dodge County 75-49 in Eastman.
Keys to Friday’s overtime win were holding Worth’s high-scoring Ashton Williams to just 8 points through three quarters, and the Jackets’ patient offense that picked apart the Rams’ 3/4 court zone press. And while Williams scored 15 in the fourth quarter to rally the Rams from a late 9-pt. deficit, to send the game into OT, he made only a single free throw in the extra period while the Jackets scored an even dozen to ice the victory.
The Jackets’ J.J. Benjamin scored five points in overtime to spark the win and finished the night with 10 points. L’Earl Conaway and La’Trell Sellers led the Jeff Davis scoring with 12 points each. Amarri Jackson had 9, J.T. Bryant and Malachi Smith 6 each, Marigus Sampson 5, A.J. Hunt and Elijah Tobler 3 apiece.
Williams finished with 24 for Worth and James Raymond added 18.
When Jeff Davis and Worth played Jan. 27 in Sylvester, the Rams built an 11-pt. halftime lead and made it stand up as the two teams battled to a 47-47 second half stalemate.
Conaway led three Jackets in double digits with 19 points including 4 shots from beyond the arc. Malachi Smith tallied 15, 13 of which came in the second half. Benjamin had 10, Sellers 8, Jackson 7, Bryant and Sampson 5 each, and Hunt 2. Worth’s Williams led four players in double figures with 29, Sherman Smith had 18, Raymond 16 and Grant Foster 11.
Last Tuesday against Dodge, the Jackets won the first quarter 11-10 but from there on out it was all Dodge.
None of the Yellow Jackets scored in double digits but Smith and Sellers came close with 9 each. Benjamin had 8, Hunt 6, Jackson 5, Bryant and Conaway 4 each, and Sampson and Caleb Brown 2 each.
Jaedon McClendon topped Dodge with 30.
