City calls for special election

In a three-minute called meeting of the Hazlehurst City Council Monday morning, only two motions were quickly discussed and then carried unanimously.
The first called for a special election on March 12, 2024, to be held in conjunction with the presidential primary to fill the council seat for Ward 2. Mayor-elect John Ramay formerly held the seat but resigned to run for the mayor’s seat, currently held by Bayne Stone. Ward 2 has been vacant since Ramay resigned and will remain vacant until the election in March.
The second motion was to set qualifying dates for the special election for the Ward 2 seat. Those dates are Dec. 6-7 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and Dec. 8 from 9 a.m. until noon. Qualifying will take place at the Jeff Davis County Board of Elections and Registrars at Jeff Davis County Courthouse, with fees for the seat set at $72
