Lady Jackets win Super Regional

Jeff Davis High rolled through the Super Regional Tournament last week at ACE Charter School in Macon with a 16-3 win over Josey, a 6-0 victory over ACE Charter and a 3-1 win over Pierce County. The wins improved the Lady Jackets’ record to 27-3 and earned them a spot in the Georgia High School State Softball Tournament in Columbus.

Jeff Davis is scheduled to play Rockmart Wednesday (today) at 11 a.m. Rockmart is the Region 7-AA champion.

Three teams from Region 3-AA are in the Elite Eight tournament in Columbus. Region champion Vidalia, No. 2 Appling County and No. 3 Toombs County. Rounding out the Elite Eight are Region 5-AA champion Eagles Landing Christian Academy (ELCA), 6-AA champion Mount Paran Christian and 8-AA champion Banks County.

The Jeff Davis-Rockmart matchup was expected to be an interesting one as the Lady Jackets from Jeff Davis are 27-3, defending state champions and ranked No. 1 by MaxPreps, and the Lady Jackets from Rockmart are 29-3, Region 7-AA champions and ranked No. 2.

Jeff Davis, Rockmart, Appling County, ELCA, Union County and Mount Paran all played in last year’s Elite Eight with Jeff Davis and Mount Paran meeting in the finals, with Jeff Davis winning 3-0. Last year’s other two final eight teams were ACE Charter and Pierce County, both of whom were eliminated by Jeff Davis in last week’s Super Regional in Macon.

Two teams playing in this week’s finals in Columbus were surprise entrants as Union County (13-11-1) finished 2nd in Region 8-AA to Banks County and ELCA, while winning Region 5-AA,  has not been regarded very highly by pollsters.

4-AA champion Thomson was eliminated in two games in the Super Regional they hosted and 1-AA Champion Cook was knocked off twice by Toombs County in the Super Regional Cook hosted.
