Lady Jackets win 5 region games

Jeff Davis High won five region games last week to improve to 20-3 overall and 12-2 in Region 1-AA.
The Lady Jackets swept a 3-game series against Sumter County in Americus Tuesday 16-0, 18-1 and 16-0, and took both games of a double header Wednesday against Berrien in Nashville, 11-0 and 9-5.
Senior third baseman Jaci Underwood had a bat on fire in the five games, going 15-for-18 with three doubles, three triples, four homers and 10 RBI. And she raised her season batting average to .573. She leads the team with eight home runs, and 35 RBI.
Senior shortstop Jenna Miles was 5-for-7 with eight RBI in two games before leg problems forced her to the bench. Underwood moved over to shortstop in Miles’ absence.
In the first game in Americus, Underwood, Miles, Ava Bohannon and Kira Buford all had two hits. Miles had a single, a triple and four RBI, Underwood had a double, a triple and two RBI. Cori Mims added a double and three RBI.
Mims was the winning pitcher, going three innings and giving up only one hit.
In the 18-1 win over Sumter, Underwood was 4-for-4 with a double, a homer and a RBI. Miles was 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and four RBI. Carrie Ellen Arnold was 3-for-3 with two doubles, Alara McCall was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Ella Wood was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Underwood picked up the win on the mound. She pitched five innings, giving up one run on one hit, three walks and nine strikeouts.
Underwood and Claire Stinson both went 3-for-3 in the third game against Sumter. Underwood had a double, a triple, a home run and three RBI, while Stinson had two singles, a homerun and two RBI. Jazmine Villasenor and Mims both drove in three runs.
Mims gave up one hit in three innings on the mound. She walked one and struck out three.
In the 11-0 win over Berrien, Underwood and Arnold were both 3-for-3 with two RBI at the plate. Underwood went deep twice and Bohannon and Laisha Hernandez also homered.
Arnold picked up a no-hit win on the mound, going five innings, walking three and striking out six.
In Wednesday’s final game, the Lady Jackets were cruising along with a 6-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning. That’s when the Rebelettes got a pair of singles and a homer and, suddenly, it was 6-3. Mims walked the next batter and Underwood went to the mound, giving  up a walk to the first batter she faced. After a strikeout and a sacrifice fly, it was 6-4. A single added another run to make it 6-5.
The Lady Jackets made it 7-5 on an Underwood triple and a Bohannon sacrifice fly.
Arnold took the mound in the sixth and retired all six batters she faced to earn a save.
Hernandez had a 2-run triple in the seventh to cap a 4-for-4, 3 RBI day at the plate. Underwood was 3-for-5 with a triple and Mims and Bentlee Metts both had a single and a double.
