Lady Jackets sweep Fitzgerald

Jeff Davis High’s defending state champion softball team enters 2023 post-season play with a 24-3 record and an 18-game winning streak.
The latest two wins came last Tuesday in Fitzgerald as the Lady Jackets shutout the Lady Hurricanes 16-0 and 12-0
Freshman left-hander Jaqueline Villasenor threw a 3-inning perfect game in the first game and senior right-hander Jaci Underwood pitched a 2-hit shutout in the 4-inning second game.
In the opener, JD scored its 16 runs on nine hits as the Lady Jackets took advantage of 10 walks, four errors and four wild pitches.
Jeff Davis got eight runs in each the first two innings. The game started with five straight walks, three stolen bases and two wild pitches and it was 2-0 with the bases loaded before the Lady Jackets hit a ball into fair territory. Kalleigh Sellers then singled in a run, and Cori Mims doubled to score two more runs. Britnee Metts singled in a run and scored on a Laisha Hernandez triple to make it 7-0. A wild pitch made it 8-0.
In the second, a walk, a Kira Buford single and back-to-back errors made it 10-0. Metts’ 2-run single upped the tally to 12-0. A single by Hernandez made it 13-0. A single, another error, a walk, another single and a fielder’s choice made it 16-0.
Metts, with two singles and three RBI, led JD at the plate. Hernandez had a single, a triple and two RBI, Buford had two singles and an RBI, Mims doubled and drove in three runs, Sellers had a single and two RBI, Miles singled, and Claire Stinson and Addison Brewer each drove in a run.
Villasenor struck out six.
In the nightcap, Kira Buford had a single, a double and two RBI to lead JD at the plate. Jazmine Villasenor had a pair of singles and an RBI, Cori Mims tripled, Claire Stinson doubled and drove in three runs, Jenna Miles doubled and drove in two runs, and Ava Bohannon doubled and drove in a run.
Underwood gave up a single and a triple, walked two, and struck out two.
After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Jackets started the scoring with two outs in the second. Madison Joyce was hit by a pitch and scored on a Buford double. Buford went to third on a wild pitch and after Alera Vann walked, Buford stole home as Vann swiped second. After Miles and Underwood walked to load the bases, Stinson hit a 2-run double to make it 4-0.
Mims led off the third with a triple and scored on a Jazmine Villasenor single. After two hit batters, Vann drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-0. After a run scored on a wild pitch, Miles doubled to drive home another run. Another run scored on a Stinson sacrifice fly and Bohannon doubled to make it 10-0.
Buford singled in a run in the fourth and Miles drove in the final run with a ground out to the mound.
Fitzgerald threatened to score in the bottom of the fourth with two runners on and one out. The next batter hit a grounder to Underwood on the mound, who threw to Miles at second and Miles relayed to first for the final out of the game.
