Fitzgerald down jackets
Jeff Davis High’s football team was no match for visiting Fitzgerald High School Friday night as the Hurricanes waltzed to a 48-0 victory on “Pink Out Night” at the Pinelands.
The opening play from scrimmage gave a preview of things to come as Fitzgerald’s big offensive line blew away the Jacket defensive line and the Hurricane ball carrier blew up the middle for 20 yards to the Jeff Davis 45. Two plays later, a 40-yd. quarterback keeper around the right side got the visitors on the scoreboard. The P.A.T. attempt failed.
On the third play of the Jackets’ first possession, a Fitzgerald defensive back picked off a pass and raced 37 yards into the end zone and the Hurricanes were quickly up by two touchdowns, at 13-0.
On Fitzgerald’s next possession, they scored in three plays, with a 47-yd. burst up the middle. The kick made it 20-0, with 5:59 remaining in the first quarter.
The Yellow Jackets finally got their offense clicking after the ensuing kickoff as they ran for three, six and three yards for a 1st down at the JD 45. After quarterback Colby Beach was sacked for an 8-yd. loss, Beach turned around and fired a strike to Jonathan Bohannon at the 44 and Bohannon shook off one tackler and battled his way to the Fitzgerald 45, for a 17-yd. gain. But on 3rd-and-1, Beach was stuffed for a yard loss and Konner Munsayac had to punt the ball away.
Two plays later, a Hurricane back fumbled the football and Karter Galbreath picked up the ball and raced 37 yards for an apparent touchdown. The officials ruled that the ball was downed but the Jackets still had possession at the Hurricane 37.
Beach connected with Eli Saunders for eight yards and Beach kept up the middle for a 1st down at the 27.
Kyrice Hunt opened the second quarter with a 5-yd. gain to the Hurricane 22. But that was as close as the Jackets would get. On 4th-and-15, Munsayac retreated to punt but a high snap gave Fitzgerald the ball at the Jeff Davis 38.
A pair of pass completions and a 21-yd. run to the three set up the Hurricanes for another score. The kick was good and the visitors led 27-0.
After the kickoff, Hunt had a 10-yd. run to move the ball quickly into Fitzgerald territory but three plays later, Munsayac punted the ball away.
The Hurricanes quickly moved the ball into JD territory but a 10-yd. penalty, a 4-yd. loss on a tackle by a host of Yellow Jackets and an 8-yd. quarterback sack by Uriel Ortega Silva forced the Hurricanes to punt for the first time. The kick sailed into the end zone and Jeff Davis took over at their 20.
After a 1-yd. loss, M.J. Hankerson scrambled 11 yards for a Yellow Jacket 1st down. Two plays later, Hankerson got 10 more. But the half came to an end with Fitzgerald on top 27-0.
The Jackets took the second half kickoff and moved the ball from their own 34 to the Fitzgerald 29 for their most successful drive of the game. But the Hurricanes pushed back and the Jackets had to punt.
The Hurricanes’ next possession started at the JD 46 and they scored in six plays, capping the drive with a 14-yd. scoring pass. The kick made it 34-0.
Munsayac got off a 53-yd. punt to back up the Hurricanes to their own eight. But, after a 6-yd. run, a ‘Cane back ran the ball up the middle, cut to the visitors’ sidelines, and dashed 86 yards for another score. The kick made it 41-0.
After the kickoff, Beach got the home stands excited with a 14-yd. keeper into Fitzgerald territory. But the Jackets could get no closer than the 38. A low punt snap set up the Hurricanes at the Yellow Jacket 36. It took them five plays to move the scoreboard to 48-0 with 3:30 left to play.
