Jeff Davis softball downs Coffee 6-1

Jeff Davis High’s softball team improved to 2-0 last Thursday with a 6-1 win over visiting Coffee High School.

Freshman Jazmine Villasenor got her first varsity start in the game in right field and went 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in three runs.

And sophomore pitcher Carrie Ellen Arnold gave up earned no runs in a 2-hit performance on the mound and has now gone 12 innings without giving up an earned run.

Arnold also had a pair of singles at the plate.

The Lady Jacket defense also sparkled in the game.

JD opened the scoring with a 3-run second inning. Arnold opened the inning reaching on an error. Ava Bohannon then walked on a 9-pitch at bat, and Villasenor singled to center to score pinch runner Kira Buford from second. After a strikeout, Bentlee Metts singled on a bunt to load the bases. Laisha Hernandez then hit a line drive to left that the left fielder couldn’t handle. She was safe on an error and Bohannon and Villasenor both scored to make it 3-0.

The Lady Jackets got two more in the third. Jaci Underwood walked on four pitches, and Arnold followed with a single. After a strikeout, Villasenor singled to center again and Underwood scored from second. With two outs, Metts was hit by a pitch to load the bases again. Hernandez then hit a grounder to third and reached on a fielder’s choice as Buford scored to up the tally to 5-0.

Coffee got an unearned run in the top of the fourth. But the Jackets got the run back in the bottom of the inning as Arnold, Bohannon and Villasenor hit consecutive singles to make it 6-0.

Arnold, after a relatively shaky start in the early innings, retired the last 12 batters of the game, five by strikeout.

Behind Villasenor and Arnold’s batting, Metts had a pair of singles, and Bohannon singled.

Arnold went the distance on the mound, giving up two hits, no earned runs, walking five and striking out nine.
