It’s Not Rocket Science — By Tommy Purser

It’s not rocket science, City Council members. The solution to the ongoing golf course fiasco is right there in front of your eyes if you’d only open your eyes and see it. Avid golfers all over Jeff Davis County and neighboring counties can see it, so why is the council so blind?

When I decided to not seek reelection to the council and step down from my post, the golf course was in the best shape it had been in in some 40 years. Course manager David Haney, and his co-workers Brice Reagin and Tony Berry had come a long way toward restoring the course which had become overgrown with weeds until the city took over ownership of the course from the county. We were holding tournaments at the course — youth tournaments, adult tournaments, there were weekly scrambles and dogfights, and high school and middle school competitions — both locals and visitors were enjoying the course and playing it regularly.

David left for a better job but he had trained Brice and Tony to do what was necessary to keep the course in great condition. And both had his phone number and he urged them to call whenever they needed advice.

But Brice and Tony ran afoul of the Mayor,  who fired them both and the golf course has been in a death spiral ever since.

At Monday’s called meeting, the council kept talking about money, about needing help with the costs — no, no, a thousand times no.

Get people on board who know how to operate a golf course and leave them alone to do the job.

It’s not rocket science.
