Board to move forward on 3 projects
At a called meeting last Wednesday, the Jeff Davis County Board of Education agreed to move forward with plans on three capital projects, including to purchase land for a new K-2 school site.
The current K-2 facility on Burketts Ferry Road is the oldest of the school system’s five school sites and, since 2021, the board has been in serious discussions about replacing the outmoded facility.
At last week’s meeting, the board authorized School Superintendent Dr. Chris Roppe to move forward with signing a land purchase agreement, based on specific criteria for the new K-2 school site.
The board also authorized Dr. Roppe to move forward with a small redesign of the new tennis field house plans. Based on the recommendations/modifications approved by the board, the Superintendent can seek bids for the project.
The board also addressed an FFA Multipurpose Arena, and authorized the Superintendent to take the next steps for the project, to include seeking a “turnkey” project and a scaled back version that would require a second phase. At the June board meeting, the Superintendent will request permission to seek a Construction Manager At-Risk partner for the project.
In personnel matters, the board accepted the resignations of Pre-K paraprofessional Cassandra Osorio, special ed teacher Don Mark Webb, primary school custodian Michael Burkett, elementary school paraprofessional Garrison Conner Rea and primary school paraprofessional Cole Baucom.
The board approved Dr. Roppe’s recommendations to hire Pre-K teacher Brittany Wooten, high school teacher Robert Strickland, primary school paraprofessionals Chandler Davenport and Sarabeth Worth, elementary school paraprofessional Candace Davis, Pre-K paraprofessionals Samone Sweeney and Diamond Battle, Pre-K teacher Cassandra Osorio and primary school custodian Bruce King.
