Hernandez is State Champion

Jeff Davis High School’s girls tennis team was not the only 2023 Georgia High School State Champion as junior Laisha Hernandez brought home an individual state championship in the 300 meter hurdles at the GHSA State Track Meet May 11-13 at McEachern High School in Powder Springs.
And she blew away the field in winning the title by almost three seconds. Hernandez covered the distance in 44.92 seconds while the second place finisher was far behind with a time of 47.76 seconds.
The Yellow Jackets’ Darius Barge, the defending state champion in the boys shot put, couldn’t repeat his 2022 feat as he finished second in the event with a heave of 55’-10”. While he didn’t win this year’s event, he topped his 2022 title-winning throw of 52’-8 1/4” and his school record throw of 53’-2 1/4” set in 2022.
Barge’s 55’-10” was the 5th longest throw in the entire GHSA.
Also taking the victory stand at the state meet was Lady Jacket Shantie Lewis who finished third in the shot put with a throw of 37’-2 1/2”.
