Jackets top Appling 6-2
Jeff Davis High’s baseball team took a 6-2 win over previously undefeated Appling County last Tuesday in Hazlehurst.
Alex Mason picked up the win on the mound, going five innings and allowing only one hit.
Catcher Carter Mullis got things started for the Jackets in the first inning with a towering, 2-out, 2-run homer over the left field fence. Ethan Picanso had singled earlier in the inning.
The Jackets added two more runs in the second inning, also with two outs. Jackson Sayer and Cason Clance drew 1-out walks and, with two outs, Picanso hit a line drive to center which was dropped by the center fielder, allowing Sayer and Clance to score.
JD made it 6-0 in the third as Mullis led off the inning with a four pitch walk. Jude Worthington, running for Mullis, went to second on a wild pitch and Duke Stone followed with a single as Worthington scored on the throw and Stone went to second. Ethan Griffin then singled and Stone scored on the throw to up the tally to 6-0.
Appling got their first run in the fifth on a single and three stolen bases.
Hayden Turner took the mound in the sixth, giving up four walks as the Pirates closed the score to 6-2.
Mullis’ 2-run shot was the big blow for the Jackets. Stone and Griffin both had a single and an RBI, and Picanso and Cason Clance both singled.
Mason went five innings, giving up one run on one hit, two walks and 10 strikeouts.
Turner pitched one inning, yielding a run on no hits, walking four and striking out two. Eli Saunders pitched the final inning, blanking Appling on one hit, a walk and a strikeout.
