Baseball opens with 13-1 win

Jeff Davis High’s baseball season got off to a strong start last Tuesday as the Yellow Jackets rolled to a 13-1 win over Bleckley County in Cochran.
The Yellow Jackets blew the game open with a 7-run fourth inning, ballooning a 3-0 lead to a 10-0 advantage.
Colby Beach’s lead-off single got the fourth inning underway. Ethan Picanso followed with a single and after Kamo Munsayac was hit by a pitch the Jackets had the bases loaded with no one out. Eli Saunders drove in Beach with a single and Hayden Turner put two more Jackets across the plate as he was safe on an error. Ethan Griffin’s fielder’s choice grounder made it 7-0 and Alex Mason walked to load the bases again. After Turner scored on a wild pitch, Carter Mullis followed with a 2-run double to up the tally to 10-0.
The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard in the first on a run-scoring single by Mason.
JD added two runs in the third as Mullis singled and two Jackets crossed the plate on the left fielder’s error.
Turner’s 2-run double and a run scoring sacrifice fly by Mason added three runs in the fifth.
Mullis led the offense with a single, a double and two RBI. Mason had a pair of singles and two RBI, Turner doubled and drove in four runs, Saunders had a single and an RBI, Beach, Picanso and Munsayac each singled, and Griffin drove in a run.
Mason took the win on the mound. He threw four innings, giving up one run on one hit, walking one and striking out nine. Cason Clance closed out the final inning, blanking Bleckley on no hits, no walks and two strikeouts.
