Jeff Davis High’s softball team jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings and coasted to an 8-2 win over Worth County last Tuesday in Hazlehurst. The game was the first of a 3-game Region 1-AA series.
In the first of two games scheduled for Thursday, Jeff Davis led 3-1 in the top of the second inning when the weather ended play for the day in Sylvester. The second and third games have been rescheduled for Sept. 28 in Sylvester with the first game to begin at 4 p.m.
Kelsey Parlor got Tuesday’s game off to a good start as the senior pitcher struck out the side in the first inning with just 13 pitches.
In the bottom of the first the Lady Jackets loaded the bases with no one out on singles by Jenna Miles and Laisha Hernandez, and a walk by Jaci Underwood. With two outs, Hernandez scored on a wild pitch but that was the only run JD could get.
In the second, Parlor gave up a double to the first batter but then she struck out the side again.
In the bottom of the inning, the Lady Jackets put two more runs on the scoreboard. Alexa Vann opened the inning with a single, Miles singled and Underwood followed with a 2-out, 2-run double to up the score to 3-0.
Parlor struck out the side in the third inning as she had struck out nine of the first 10 batters she faced.
JD put the game away in the third with a 5-run inning.
Analese Poole opened the inning with a triple to left field. Thigpen followed with an RBI single. With two outs and a runner at first, walks to Bentlee Metts and Miles loaded the bases. Hernandez then reached on an error as Vann and Metts scored, and Miles and Hernandez advanced to third and second. Underwood then delivered a 2-run single to make it 8-0.
Worth picked up an unearned run in the forth as Parlor ended the inning with her 10th strikeout.
Parlor struck out the side in the fifth to bring her total Ks to 13.
Metts led off the Jacket fifth with a triple but the inning ended with her stranded at third.
Worth got its second run in the sixth as Parlor did not get a strikeout for the first inning.
Parlor fanned the first two batters she faced in the seventh inning to give her 15 strikeouts for the game.
Parlor gave up one earned run on four hits, struck out 15 and did not give up a walk.
Underwood led the 8-hit game with a single, a double and four RBI. Poole and Metts both had triples, Thigpen had a single, a sacrifice and an RBI, and Miles, Hernandez and Vann all had singles.
