Jeff Davis High lost its first Region 2-AA game last week, falling to Vidalia 3-1 last Tuesday in Vidalia. The Lady Jackets bounced back Wednesday to take a 9-4 region win over Bacon County in Hazlehurst and, Monday, avenged one of their two season losses with a 3-1, 8-inning win over Pierce County in Blackshear. The games left JD with a 12-2 overall record and a 4-1 region mark.
Jeff Davis and Vidalia went into the bottom of the sixth inning tied at 1-1 when the Lady Indians scored a pair of runs to take the 3-1 victory.
The JD run came in the top of the fourth and gave the Lady Jackets a 1-0 lead. Jenna Miles tripled to lead off the inning and scored on Maeleigh Burns’ 2-out single to right.
In the bottom of the inning, Vidalia started the inning with a triple and scored on a 2-out single as well.
Pitcher Kelsey Parlor found herself in trouble in the first inning as she walked the first two batters she faced and, with two outs, walked the bases loaded. But she struck out the next batter to survive the jam.
The Lady Indians put a runner in scoring position with one out in the second but third baseman Jaci Underwood caught a line drive and doubled the runner at second on a throw to Ella Wood to end the threat.
The Lady Jackets loaded the bases in the fifth on a Bentlee Metts single and 2-out walks to Miles and Wood but Vidalia got out of the inning.
Vidalia loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of walks and a hit batter but Parlor got the next batter out to end the inning.
In the sixth, Vidalia got two runs and had the bases loaded with two outs when Parlor got a ground out to stop the scoring.
The Lady Jackets threatened a comeback in the top of the seventh as Metts and Laisha Hernandez got back-to-back 1-out singles but a pair of strikeouts ended the game.
Jeff Davis out-hit Vidalia 6-5. Miles had a single and a triple, Metts had a pair of singles, Burns had a single and an RBI, and Hernandez singled.
Parlor gave up two earned runs on five hits, walked nine, hit one and struck out five.
In the Bacon County game, the Lady Jackets opened a 6-0 lead through five innings before giving up four runs in the top of the sixth, and then getting three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Jeff Davis got a single run in the first as Miles led off with a single, went to second on Wood’s sacrifice bunt and scored on an Underwood single.
They added two more runs in the third as Hernandez got a 1-out single, stole second and scored as Miles reached on an error. Underwood then drove in Miles with a single to make it 3-0.
A 3-run fifth sealed the win. Wood started things with a 1-out single and stole second. Underwood was then intentionally walked and Burns followed with a single to load the bases. After Wood was forced out at home for the second out, Payton Thigpen, Kalleigh Sellers and Metts got back-to-back-back bases-loaded walks to force three runs across the plate.
Entering the top of the sixth, Parlor was cruising along on the mound. She had retired the first nine batters she faced and 13 of the first 15. But in the sixth, a dropped third strike got the leadoff batter on base. A trio of singles and a double gave the Lady Raiders four runs.
JD got three of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning as Wood singled, Underwood doubled, Burns and Thigpen got singles, and an error got another run across the plate.
Burns came on to pitch in the final inning and a pair of errors put two Bacon runners on with one out. But Underwood fielded a grounder at third, stepped on the bag for one out and threw to Analese Poole at first to double up the batter and end the game.
Underwood was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI to lead the hitting. Wood and Burns both had a pair of singles, Thigpen had a single and drove in two runs, Miles and Hernandez both singled and Sellers added an RBI.
Parlor threw six innings, giving up four unearned runs on six hits, walking one and striking out eight. Burns gave up no runs on no hits, walked none and struck out none.
Jeff Davis and Pierce battled through seven innings with neither team able to get a run across the plate.
In the top of the eighth, the Lady Jackets erupted. Burns led off with a single, Thigpen was hit by a pitch and Poole singled to load the bases with no one out. With one out, Metts grounded out to shortstop and pinch runner Jacie Jones scored. Hernandez followed with a 2-run single to make it 3-0.
A lead-off solo homer in the bottom of the inning got the Lady Bears on the scoreboard. A hit batter and a single put the tying runs on base with one out. The next batter hit a grounder to the mound, pitcher Underwood fielded it, threw to Miles at second and Miles threw to Jones at first to complete the double play and end the game.
Both teams had plenty of baserunners during the game as JD had nine hits and Pierce seven. Poole had a pair of singles, Underwood doubled, Hernandez singled and drove in two runs, Miles, Wood, Burns, Thigpen and Sellers each singled, and Metts had an RBI.
Parlor pitched four innings, giving up no runs on three hits, walking two and striking out one. Burns pitched one inning, giving up no runs on one hit, walking one and striking out none. Underwood got the win in relief. She pitched three innings, giving up one run on three hits, walking none, hitting one and striking out none.
