Baseball off to 1-2 start

After the first three games of the 2021 baseball season, it appears pitching will be the biggest asset for the Jeff Davis High baseball team.
Seniors Cole Baucom and Matthew White and junior Cam Williams all turned in sparkling performances on the mound as the Jackets fell 5-2 to Bleckley County in Hazlehurst, and split a pair of games in Jesup, losing 4-3 to Class 5-A Wayne County and edging Class 6-A Lee County 3-2 with a bottom of the seventh rally.
Baucom turned in a superb opening game performance against Bleckley County but the relief corps couldn’t hold onto the Jackets’ 2-0 lead. Baucom started on the mound and pitched 4 1/3 no-hit innings, walking two and striking out eight.
The Jackets out-hit the Royals 6-5, led by Matthew Glass and Hamp Hayes who both had a pair of singles. Cade Walters and Conner Rea both had singles and Ethan Hulett and Baucom both drove in a run.
Trenton Clance took the loss on the mound. He pitched 2/3 inning, giving up three earned runs on three hits and walking one. Duke Stone threw two innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits, walking one and striking out six.
Jeff Davis out-hit Wayne County 6-4 but still lost despite a strong performance on the mound by Williams. Williams went the distance on the mound, giving up only one earned run on four hits, striking out five and walking none. But defensive errors led to JD going 0-2 for the season.
Williams retired the first seven batters in order but an error and a 2-out homer put Jeff Davis in a 2-0 hole. A bases-loaded, 2-run Clance double tied the game in the fourth.
Clance doubled and singled and drove in two runs to lead the Jackets at the plate. Alex Mason doubled and Walters, Glass and Williams added singles.
Against Lee County, the Jackets scored the winning run in the bottom of the eventh inning on Clance’s walk-off single that scored pinch runner Carter Mullis. With the score tied 2-2, Conner Rea led off the bottom of the final inning with a single to left, and took second on defensive indifference. Mullis came on to run for Rea and Clance singled to right to plate Mullis.
The Yellow Jackets got their third straight strong performance by a starter on the mound, this time in the form of White who threw six innings giving up only two hits. And both Lee County runs were unearned in the 3-2 Jeff Davis win.
Freshman Alex Mason got the win, pitching one inning in relief.
At the plate, Clance and Mason both had singles and an RBI, and Williams and Rea had a single apiece.
